Apparently the October Oil Habit has gone international 🥳 My client is currently in New York, and yesterday was at the top of a skyscraper, living her absolute best life... and STILL remembered her cuticle oil.

If she can do it up there, the rest of us have absolutely no excuse 😂

This is exactly what the October Oil Habit is about. Not being perfect. Not turning nail care into another chore. Just making that tiny daily habit stick, wherever you happen to be, even if that happens to be several hundred feet above New York.

Okay but THIS is why you can never judge a nail colour from one photo!

I’m wearing Blood On The Moon from the new Practically Magic collection and depending on the lighting, it genuinely looks like I’m wearing two different gel polish colours!

One minute it’s a rich, deep purple, then the light hits it and suddenly there’s this completely different tone coming through!

THIS is exactly the sort of thing I love showing you! Not just a perfectly lit swatch photo, but what nail colours actually look like on real nails, in real life, in different lighting.

Four new gel polish shades and, obviously, the first thing I had to do was swatch them all for you (even if it was 10pm last night)!

These four colours together are giving me so many autumn nail ideas already.

Which one would you pick first? Because I already know my clients are going to have favourites!

Ever looked at a set of nails you LOVED in real life, taken a photo and thought… well, they looked better five seconds ago 🤦🏻‍♀️

Before you start picking apart your nail work, look at the photo itself.

Good nail photography can make such a difference to how your work looks online, and you absolutely do NOT need to be a professional photographer to take better nail pictures.

A few simple things I always think about:

📸 Is the photo bright enough?
📸 Are the nails the main focus?
📸 Is the hand posed naturally?
📸 Is there too much clutter in the background?
📸 Would one hand work better than two?
📸 Could cropping the photo bring the nails closer and make the composition stronger?

I take my nail photos from slightly further away and crop them afterwards. It gives me more control over where the nails sit in the final image and means I’m not trying to get the PERFECT shot there and then.

Please remember this when you’re scrolling through Instagram comparing your nail pictures to everybody else’s.... Sometimes it’s not your nail work that needs improving. It’s simply how you’re photographing it.

Save this for your next client so you can check your photo before they leave. And send it to a nail tech who’s forever saying their photos don’t do their nails justice.
