They say that grief is just love with nowhere to go. In nanny's final week, the cottage walls felt like they might actually burst from the sheer amount of love inside them. It was a time that was somehow both horrific and deeply beautiful. It was a time of quiet words, of holding on, and of being there when it mattered most.

We tried our absolute hardest to care for Nanny at home as she wished, every decision made and every step taken was done out of a desperate need to protect her. In a week where we felt we were losing everything, we found a level of devotion that most people never get to witness.

But the system failed us and let her down! After it had broken us all and when we had lost all hope we had to put our trust in Cynthia Spencer Hospice. We arrived at the hospice to the sun shining on a family tree. A sign we had made the right decision. In Nanny’s final nights, the hospice became our sanctuary.

Because of Cynthia Spencer, Nanny was comfortable, she was not in pain, and we finally found the stillness we needed to say goodbye.

The "doing" is now over, and the cottage is quiet. I promised Nanny I would be strong for her and part of that strength is now ensuring other families are able to have the same "anchor" we did when the tide comes in.

We will be walking on 9th May in the Hospice twilight walk to raise funds to support their end-of-life services in Northamptonshire.
