Ingrown toenail – is it always necessary to remove the whole nail?

I notice that some people, after a consultation and learning that nail care and correction will take time, choose removal hoping for a quicker solution. However, the procedure itself is not the end of the process – healing follows, and if the nail is allowed to grow back, there is also a regrowth period.

The nail grows back, but it may become deformed – the result is not always what was expected.

Possible consequences of an incorrectly performed nail resection include:

• A remaining sharp nail edge or fragment may grow into the skin again and cause pain.
• Damage to the nail root – the matrix – may cause irregular, deformed or split nail regrowth.
• Recurring inflammation or infection – redness, swelling, pus and painful overgrowth of tissue.
• Prolonged healing, scarring or persistent tenderness around the nail.

An incorrectly performed nail resection may fail to resolve the problem – a remaining nail edge may become ingrown again, while damage to the nail root may lead to deformed regrowth, pain, inflammation or infection. It is important to entrust these procedures to an appropriately trained professional.

Is there another way? There are options that preserve the nail.

The photos show three examples of nail care and correction involving my clients.

This is a process that takes time. Nail care and correction are tailored to each individual, with changes monitored at follow-up appointments. Home care is important too. One appointment may be just the beginning.

These examples show another approach – preserving the nail. Whether it is suitable in a particular case is determined after assessing the condition.

If pain or swelling increases after the procedure, or if pus, spreading redness or a fever develops, seek medical advice.

Before choosing nail removal, find out which options are suitable for your situation and what to expect after the procedure.
