What a brilliant weekend. I’ve been wanting to go to one of David’s clinics for some time and I definitely wasn’t disappointed! What a lovely person and brilliant teacher David Landerville is. I also love the way he listens to how the horses feel and makes that such an integral part of his work. Thank you to Amy for being such a great host and all the participants who made it such an open and friendly atmosphere.

These days I rarely post anything on here, and to be honest there’s a reason for that.

The truth is, is that the more I learn about communicating with horses, the more difficulty I have putting it into words, they are simply not enough!

I also realise that this isn’t stuff that you can tell people about before they are ready, and it will look slightly different for everyone as being with horses is as much about knowing yourself as it is about knowing them.

A couple of years ago I went to a Nahshon Cooke clinic where he talked about having an open heart, and I felt something that day that has truly changed my life.

Opening my heart has meant I have experienced so many beautiful moments, but it has also been difficult at times as when we truly open our hearts there is nowhere to hide and we have to face things about ourselves that perhaps we would prefer not to see.

I honestly think though that to truly be with horses we need to learn to love and accept every part of ourselves, and be kind to ourselves in the process.

It’s not something I can really tell you about or teach you about but for anyone else on that journey I say embrace it all, it’s definitely worth it, we can all be so much more than we think we can be and your horses will open their hearts to you just like you do to them ❤️

Could we be entering a new era of dressage?

Not one where we ask, "How can the horse perform better for us?" but one where we ask, "How can this work become a source of healing—for both horse and human?"

The classical principles have always pointed us in this direction. At their heart, they ask us to honour the horse's body, mind, and individual capacity. They encourage us to develop relationship before performance, balance before power, and understanding before achievement.

When our training is genuinely in service of the horse's well-being, something remarkable happens.

A horse who feels safe, balanced, and comfortable can offer us something no technique alone can create: presence, softness, trust, and connection. Their well-being becomes a gift to us.

But it doesn't stop there.

The process of learning to create that well-being in another living being changes us too. It asks for patience instead of force. Curiosity instead of judgement. Listening instead of controlling. We learn that when we find kindness, groundedness and joy ourselves, we have a lot to offer in the conversation with the horse.

In that sense, classical dressage is more than a training system. It can become a practice of healing.

As we help our horses find greater ease in their bodies, we often discover greater ease in our own.

Perhaps this is where the future of dressage lies—not in choosing between performance and welfare, but in recognising that true performance has always grown from welfare. And that the relationship itself can become a path of healing for both horse and human.

Why Walking Is One of the Most Powerful Regulators of the Equine Nervous System, Fascia, and Movement

Walking is often underestimated.

For many horses, it becomes little more than the time spent getting from the barn to the arena, warming up before “real work,” or cooling down afterward. Yet beneath its apparent simplicity lies one of the most sophisticated movement patterns the horse performs.

No other gait combines continuous ground contact, rhythmic spinal motion, coordinated breathing, vestibular stimulation, low-load fascial movement, and constant proprioceptive feedback in quite the same way. Every step supplies the nervous system with information while simultaneously asking the body to organize itself around that information.

This is one reason walking occupies such an important place in healthy movement. Rather than overwhelming the horse with speed, suspension, or large forces, it creates an environment in which posture, coordination, tissue quality, and movement efficiency can continually adjust from one stride to the next.

Walking is not simply exercise. It is one of the body’s primary methods of self-organization.

The Nervous System Learns Through Repetition

Every movement begins and ends with the nervous system.

Muscles do not decide when to contract. Fascia does not independently choose how much tension to carry. These tissues respond to information generated by the brain, spinal cord, and the countless sensory receptors distributed throughout the body.

Walking provides that information in remarkable abundance.

Each stride follows the same four-beat sequence, creating an uninterrupted rhythm that repeats hundreds or even thousands of times during a single session. As each hoof contacts the ground, receptors within the foot, tendons, ligaments, muscles, fascia, joints, and skin immediately report changes in load, joint position, pressure, stretch, and movement back to the spinal cord and brain.

Instead of receiving isolated bursts of information, the nervous system receives a continuous stream of predictable sensory input.

With every step it compares where the horse intended to move with where the horse actually moved, making countless small adjustments to posture, balance, muscle activity, and coordination before the next foot even reaches the ground.

This process continually refines proprioception—the body’s awareness of where it is in space—and helps maintain efficient movement patterns throughout the horse’s life.

Rather than relying on large corrections after mistakes occur, walking allows the nervous system to make thousands of tiny adjustments before problems become obvious.

Rhythm Changes How the Body Organizes Itself

The importance of walking lies not only in movement, but in rhythm.

Rhythm provides predictability. Predictability allows the nervous system to devote fewer resources to protecting the body and more resources to organizing efficient movement.

This is particularly important after periods of physical or emotional stress.

Travel, confinement, demanding exercise, discomfort, changes in environment, or prolonged inactivity often increase protective muscle activity throughout the body. The horse becomes less variable, less elastic, and more guarded.

Slow rhythmic walking introduces a steady flow of familiar sensory information without overwhelming the system.

As the rhythm continues, muscle activity often becomes more evenly distributed, posture begins to reorganize, breathing settles, and movement becomes increasingly coordinated.

The nervous system does not require intense exercise to improve organization.

It requires meaningful information delivered consistently.

The Spine Moves as One Continuous System

Although we often think of walking as a movement of the limbs, much of its value comes from what happens through the spine.

As each hind limb advances, the pelvis rotates slightly while the trunk bends gently toward the supporting limb before reversing on the following step. This produces a continuous alternating wave travelling through the pelvis, lumbar spine, thoracic spine, ribcage, neck, and ultimately the head.

These movements are subtle, but they are extraordinarily important.

Every stride produces controlled rotation of the thoracolumbar spine, gentle side-bending of the ribcage, alternating lengthening and shortening of muscles along each side of the trunk, and continual loading of the fascia that links these structures together.

Because the movement is slow and uninterrupted, sensory receptors embedded throughout muscles, fascia, ligaments, joint capsules, and connective tissues have sufficient time to detect movement accurately and relay that information back to the nervous system.

Walking therefore becomes a continual conversation between movement and sensation.

The spine moves.

The nervous system responds.

The next stride becomes slightly more refined.

Fascia Responds to Movement, Not Force

Fascia is often described as the body’s connective tissue, but its role extends far beyond simply wrapping muscles.

It forms an interconnected network that links muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and organs into a continuous mechanical and sensory system. Embedded within this network are numerous mechanoreceptors capable of detecting tension, compression, vibration, pressure, and movement.

Walking supplies exactly the kind of input fascia responds to best.

Low-load, repetitive movement encourages fascial layers to slide smoothly over one another, distributes tension throughout multiple connective tissue pathways, and continually exposes tissues to changing vectors of load without excessive strain.

At the same time, the alternating shortening and lengthening that occur with every stride help maintain tissue hydration.

Fascial tissues depend on movement to circulate water between collagen fibres and surrounding ground substance. Without regular movement, these tissues may become less adaptable, reducing their ability to glide efficiently as muscles contract and relax.

Walking provides thousands of opportunities for fascia to remain hydrated, elastic, and responsive.

Movement Nourishes the Tissues Themselves

Many of the body’s supporting tissues rely on movement for their normal function.

Articular cartilage receives much of its nutrition through the cyclical compression and decompression that occur during weight bearing. Synovial fluid circulates within joints and tendon sheaths as structures move, helping lubricate surfaces while supplying nutrients and removing metabolic waste.

Tendons that pass through synovial sheaths depend on this movement to glide with minimal friction.

Elsewhere, tendons surrounded by paratenon rely on gentle repetitive motion to maintain normal sliding between tissues while supporting circulation within the surrounding connective tissue.

Walking supplies this mechanical nourishment without exposing tissues to the larger forces generated during faster work.

Each stride becomes another opportunity for joints, tendons, fascia, muscles, and connective tissues to maintain healthy movement.

The Head and Neck Influence the Entire Body

The alternating movement of the spine naturally continues into the neck.

During a relaxed walk, the head and neck swing gently in synchrony with the stride, functioning like a pendulum.

This movement contributes to balance, but it also provides continuous stimulation to the vestibular system located within the inner ear.

The vestibular system helps regulate posture, eye position, muscle tone, balance, and orientation in space. As the head moves rhythmically, vestibular input combines with proprioceptive information arriving from the limbs and spine, allowing the nervous system to coordinate the body more efficiently.

Restriction anywhere along this chain changes the information reaching the brain.

Discomfort, muscular tension, restrictive equipment, or habitual guarding may reduce normal head and neck movement. The nervous system frequently compensates by increasing muscle activity elsewhere in an attempt to stabilize the body.

These compensations may extend far beyond the neck itself.

For this reason, the quality of the walk depends on the freedom of the entire spinal system rather than the limbs alone.

Excellent. Here’s the second half.

Ribcage Motion Is Central to Healthy Movement

The ribcage is often thought of primarily as a protective structure for the heart and lungs, but mechanically it serves a much larger purpose. It forms the foundation from which the thoracic sling supports the front half of the horse while also providing an attachment site for many of the muscles that influence posture, breathing, and locomotion.

Every step at the walk produces subtle movement between the ribs.

The ribcage rotates, expands, narrows, elevates, and lowers in coordination with the limbs and spine. These movements may appear almost imperceptible from the outside, yet they continually change the forces passing through the muscles and fascia surrounding the thorax.

Rather than remaining rigid, the ribcage functions as a dynamic structure that absorbs force, transfers load, and coordinates movement between the forehand and hindquarters.

When rib mobility decreases, this relationship begins to change. The thoracic sling becomes less efficient, the forehand often feels heavier, breathing may become more restricted, and the trunk loses some of its ability to distribute force evenly through the body.

Walking encourages this mobility to occur naturally.

Its slow rhythm gives the ribs time to move through small but continuous ranges of motion, allowing the surrounding muscles and fascia to adapt with every stride.

The Thoracic Sling Depends on Timing More Than Strength

Unlike the pelvis, the horse’s forelimbs have no bony attachment to the trunk. Instead, the front half of the body is suspended by an intricate network of muscles, fascia, tendons, and connective tissues collectively known as the thoracic sling.

Because of this arrangement, every step requires precise timing.

The sling must absorb the impact of landing, stabilize the ribcage, support the trunk, transfer forces across the body, and then release again as the limb leaves the ground. This happens hundreds of times during even a short walk.

Walking provides the ideal environment for refining this timing because each stride occurs slowly enough for the nervous system to make continual adjustments without the larger forces present during faster gaits.

The thoracic sling develops efficient coordination through repetition.

Every stride becomes another opportunity to improve how the horse organizes support beneath the trunk.

Breathing and Movement Work Together

Breathing is inseparable from movement.

As the horse walks, the ribcage expands and rotates while the diaphragm, abdominal wall, intercostal muscles, and surrounding fascia move in coordinated patterns. These tissues are not working independently. They function as parts of one integrated system that continually adjusts to changes in posture and locomotion.

This rhythmic coordination offers several advantages.

Ventilation becomes more efficient, the thoracic cavity changes shape with less effort, and the constant interaction between breathing and movement generates additional sensory information for the nervous system.

The diaphragm itself forms an important fascial connection between the thorax, abdomen, spine, and limbs. Every breath therefore contributes not only to oxygen exchange but also to postural organization throughout the body.

When breathing becomes restricted through tension, discomfort, or poor movement patterns, these relationships become less efficient.

Walking encourages the entire system to coordinate again through repetition rather than force.

The Head and Neck Help Load the Fascial System

The gentle pendulum of the head and neck influences far more than balance.

As the head moves forward and back with each stride, tension shifts through the fascial continuities connecting the poll, cervical spine, sternum, ribcage, shoulders, abdominal wall, and forelimbs.

Rather than remaining under constant tension, these tissues experience alternating loading and unloading.

This cyclical loading stores and releases small amounts of elastic energy while continually changing tension throughout the body.

The result is a system that remains responsive instead of rigid.

When normal head and neck movement is reduced, these fascial pathways receive less dynamic loading. Over time the horse may begin moving with greater stiffness through the shoulders, reduced spinal oscillation, shorter stride length, and increased muscular effort.

Walking naturally restores these changing patterns of load thousands of times during a single session.

Manual and Massage Therapy Improve the Quality of Movement

Walking and manual therapy complement one another because they influence different parts of the same system.

Massage, myofascial techniques, and other forms of manual therapy can reduce excessive muscle tone, improve fascial glide, decrease unnecessary protective guarding, and enhance the quality of sensory information travelling from soft tissues to the nervous system.

These changes create opportunity.

Walking allows the nervous system to use that opportunity.

Each stride provides another chance for the brain to compare incoming sensory information with outgoing motor commands. As movement becomes easier and more symmetrical, the nervous system gradually begins selecting more efficient movement strategies.

This explains why horses often appear to move differently after bodywork.

The session itself does not teach new movement patterns.

Instead, it improves the body’s capacity to produce them.

Walking is where those improved possibilities are repeated, refined, and gradually incorporated into the horse’s normal way of going.

In many cases, the value of manual therapy is not measured by what changes during the appointment, but by what the horse learns during the thousands of steps taken afterward.

Movement Maintains Tissue Health

Movement serves another essential purpose that is often overlooked.

Many tissues depend upon regular loading and unloading simply to maintain their normal physiology.

Articular cartilage receives nutrients through repeated compression and decompression.

Synovial fluid circulates within joints and tendon sheaths as structures move, lubricating surfaces while nourishing cartilage and reducing friction.

Tendons surrounded by synovial sheaths glide through fluid-filled sleeves specifically designed to minimize wear during movement. Tendons without sheaths rely on surrounding connective tissues, including the paratenon, to provide both mobility and blood supply.

Without regular movement, these tissues receive fewer opportunities to circulate fluid, maintain lubrication, and preserve normal tissue glide.

Walking supplies this stimulus safely and repeatedly.

Terrain Adds Information

Walking becomes even more valuable when the environment changes.

Gentle hills, varied footing, changes in direction, natural obstacles, and different visual surroundings continually alter how the body must organize itself.

Every small change in terrain modifies limb loading, joint position, spinal movement, balance, and muscle activity.

Rather than repeating one movement pattern endlessly, the nervous system must continually solve new movement problems.

This variability encourages adaptability.

Walking uphill asks the thoracic sling and hindquarters to organize differently than walking downhill.

Uneven ground requires continual refinement of proprioception.

Different footing changes the way force is absorbed and returned through the limbs.

These small challenges provide rich sensory information without requiring high intensity.

Variety Prevents Fixed Movement Patterns

The nervous system quickly becomes efficient at whatever it repeats most often.

While this ability allows horses to learn, it also means repetitive movement can gradually become automatic.

The same arena.

The same warm-up.

The same circles.

The same footing.

Eventually the nervous system stops exploring alternatives because it has already learned an acceptable solution.

Introducing variety keeps movement adaptable.

Different environments, changing surfaces, gradual turns, poles, gentle hills, transitions, and changes of direction all encourage the nervous system to continue refining rather than simply repeating established patterns.

Walking is most beneficial when it remains dynamic rather than monotonous. Although the forces generated at the walk are relatively low, prolonged walking under saddle still places sustained demands on the thoracic sling, spinal stabilizers, and the muscles supporting the rider. As fatigue develops, movement quality may gradually decline, even when the horse appears relaxed. Introducing gentle hills, changes in footing, brief periods of trot or canter when appropriate, changes of direction, or occasional pauses redistributes mechanical load, refreshes sensory input, and helps maintain the rhythm and coordination that make walking so valuable.

The goal is not simply to accumulate walking time, but to preserve the quality of every step.

Fascia benefits in much the same way.

Changing vectors of load distribute forces across multiple connective tissue pathways instead of repeatedly stressing the same fibres and fascial planes.

The result is a body that remains adaptable rather than becoming increasingly specialized in only one pattern of movement.

A Simple Walk Is Doing More Than It Appears

Walking may look uncomplicated, but beneath its quiet rhythm an extraordinary amount of organization is taking place.

The nervous system continually processes sensory information.

The spine oscillates from side to side.

The ribcage expands, rotates, and supports breathing.

The vestibular system refines balance.

The thoracic sling coordinates support beneath the trunk.

Fascia adjusts tension while remaining hydrated and responsive.

Joints, tendon sheaths, muscles, and connective tissues are nourished through repeated movement.

Manual and massage therapy can improve the quality of these inputs by reducing unnecessary restriction and restoring tissue mobility, but movement is what allows those changes to become part of the horse’s everyday function.

Every walk becomes practice.

Every stride becomes information.

Taken together, those thousands of small repetitions influence posture, coordination, movement quality, and tissue health in ways that no single exercise or technique can accomplish alone.

Far from being “just walking,” it remains one of the most valuable tools available for supporting sound, adaptable, comfortable movement throughout the horse’s life.

This comes with a trigger warning… polarising content ahead.

I think I am in quite a unique position when it comes to horse training. I have had a chance to work with hundreds of wild horses, completely blank canvases when it comes to human interaction. I’ve also worked with a lot of wild horses that other people have started and run into problems with. I’ve worked with a lot of problem horses too over the years. I’ve produced sport horses to a very high level, and I’ve ridden some 10,000 km at speed across Mongolia on countless different native horses. My background is extensive and varied. Mostly, I love working with horses and figuring out how to create a happy, willing horse.

However, there are some things I’d like to say.

I’ve seen a lot of horse training methods come in and out of fashion. I’ve seen the good and the bad in each method.

After seeing all this, I also strongly believe it’s not the method; it’s how you use it, that determines the outcome. There is no magic training method that will substitute for or shortcut consistency, clarity and understanding.

Very few methods are bad. Most are really good and have their place within the horse world. Most methods and concepts have a lot of overlap as well. I think almost all horse owners are also trying their best to do right by their horses and are actually just figuring it out themselves along the way. However, when being sent horses to work with, I do notice some trends with different methods.

Join-up, Monty Roberts, was a childhood hero of mine and has done immense good for the horse world. He was a master horseman and had a great method of training wild horses. When I first started horse training, it was his methods that were most popular. A lot of his concepts are in my training today.

However, the things I saw commonly and a lot of horses that were sent to me did two things. They constantly circled you and had become impossible for their owners to touch or get near. They ran non-stop in round pens. I know some people who would run their horses for hours, and the horses still wouldn’t ever turn in. They had, in fact, become conditioned just to run. A lot of the parts of my training, the foundation of a lot of my work, come from fixing these behaviours. It was not the method; it wasn’t Monty, these were just things that went wrong as people were learning and trying to figure it out. I learned a ton helping horses overcome this.

Parrelli- again a master horseman that, while he has some controversy surrounding him, was an overall force for good in the horse world. He made a great marketable program that was easy for the common person to understand.

I didn’t really see too many problems, but his followers became cult-like, and no other knowledge was good enough. Lots of people could do the seven games, but they failed to use those skills in everyday life to create a safe, easy-to-manage, happy horse. The worst was horses just repeating the “games” but not actually understanding the concept of the training.

The old-fashioned hard way of running horses up a race or crush, wacking a halter on, letting them out and tying them to a fence post. The horses that coped with this method usally turned out great and could cope with just about anything. Knowing how to use a crush or race safely is also, I believe, an important skill as a horseman. I’ve taught many people how I do it in a safe, ethical way for the horse. In case of a horse that’s injured, it can be a life-saving skill.

This method, to this day, is most often misused. The horses that don’t cope with this and don’t naturally respond to pressure- the introverted horses- can be wrecked mentally and physically for life. Used badly, it is abuse. A lot of horses that have a strong panic response wether they are wild or domestic, have come to me with this background. I’m very wary of both using it and of when people tell me this is how they’ve started their horses. I have seen some terrible things.

R+ or treat training. I feel very, very wary writing this, but it is the favourite of the month or the last few years. There is a lot of talk online about it. Some of the trainers and close friends that I admire as horsemen and women use this method with incredible results. They can teach horses to do some amazing things and produce truly beautiful work. I’ve used this method to teach ponies some great tricks. It was very effective, and used correctly, it is a great tool.

However, some of the most difficult, unhappy, aggressive and angry horses have come to me from people trying to use this method. Done badly, it creates an addiction response to treats, almost like a drug addict trying to get their next fix. There is also great research out now, that this is almost exactly what it does to their brain. Most other trainers and farriers I know start to cringe when they hear about it or when someone calls us for help with their horse. The wild horses, for whom this method has failed, are some of the most difficult horses I’ve worked with because usally all your other aids, awareness of body language between you and the horse, have been eroded.

I also know this is a doubly sad situation because most people trying this method and running into problems have gone down this route because they like the idea of gentle, kind, horse-led training sessions. They are trying to do what’s best for their horse, and I’m the first to acknowledge that. The true tragedy is that the horses look angriest and most unhappy around their owners. Sometimes this pushy, angry behaviour also trickles over to their interactions around other horses. I also know that the only times I feel really scared that I’m going to get hurt and deal with truly angry, unhappy horses are with horses that have had failed treat or R+ training. It’s a great method but terrible in the wrong hands or when you are trying to learn with tricky horses yourself.

Other methods come and go, I could talk about liberty or roping horses, but they are usally elements of some of the above methods. Mostly, I think people are trying their best, but horse training is hard; some horses and some people are not always the easiest combinations for success.

I'm the first to admit I've made mistakes, I've learned, refined and at times changed some of my practices and concepts. No trainer gets it right all of the time, and most of us accept that you won't either.

All methods are good with good timing, understanding, consistency and clarity. Also, just showing up every day with your horse and putting the hours in.

I think as a horse person until you have hundreds of hours of practise and multiple horses trained through. Keeping an open mind as well as being simple and clear for the horse is the most important part. There isn’t a magic formula out there or one method that is far superior to all the rest. No one has the magic formula. It is always about the journey and what you learn along the way.

One of the most radical things you can do with a horse is let them change your mind.

Most of us were taught that the human is supposed to have the answers.

The plan.
The goal.
The agenda.

The horse's job is to learn it.

But what if relationship is something different?

What if relationship means both beings get to influence what happens next?

I remember spending years assuming that if a horse wasn't enthusiastic about something, my job was to figure out how to make them more willing.

Train it better.
Explain it better.
Motivate it better.

Now I find myself asking a different question:

What if the horse knows something I don't?

Maybe they notice something in the environment.

Maybe they're uncomfortable.

Maybe they're confused.

Maybe they simply have a preference.

Or maybe they are revealing a perspective that would never have occurred to me.

I think one of the reasons humans struggle with this idea is that we've been taught that influence only flows one direction.

From the human to the horse.

But the most meaningful relationships I've experienced have never felt like that.

They've felt like a conversation.

And conversations change both participants.

The horse changes.

The human changes.

The plan changes.

Sometimes even the destination changes.

Perhaps that is what makes genuine partnership so different from control.

Control asks,
"How do I get you to follow my idea?"

Partnership asks,
"What becomes possible when both of our ideas matter?"

And every once in a while, a horse offers an answer so unexpected, so wise, and so honest that you realize the lesson was never meant for them.
