πŸŒπŸ‘£ WORLD REFLEXOLOGY WEEK β€” CELEBRATING REFLEXOLOGY πŸ‘£πŸŒ

To celebrate World Reflexology Week, here is a brief look at the history of this popular complementary therapy and how it has developed around the world.

πŸ‘£ From ancient traditions to modern practice

Foot and hand massage have been used in many cultures for centuries. However, modern Western Reflexology began developing in the early 20th century.

American physician Dr William H. Fitzgerald introduced ZONE Therapy, based on ten longitudinal zones of the body. His work was later developed by Dr Joe Shelby Riley.

Physiotherapist Eunice Ingham then focused particularly on the feet. During the 1930s, she developed detailed foot maps and published Stories the Feet Can Tell in 1938. Her teaching helped shape the reflexology practised by many practitioners today.

🌎 A global complementary therapy

Through books, teaching and professional training, Reflexology spread internationally. Today, it is practised in private clinics, wellness centres and spas, and is also used in some supportive healthcare settings.

πŸ”¬ Research continues

Research has explored reflexology’s possible role in relaxation, stress, anxiety, pain, fatigue, sleep and quality of life.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that supports relaxation and wellbeing and is not intended to diagnose or treat disease or replace medical care.

World Reflexology Week is an opportunity to celebrate the profession, share responsible information and recognise the importance of therapeutic touch, relaxation and wellbeing.

Happy World Reflexology Week! 🌍 πŸ‘£ πŸ’™

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis has examined the effects of foot reflexology on breastfeeding outcomes and postpartum comfort.

The analysis brought together findings from 3 experimental studies involving 260 postpartum women, including two randomized controlled trials and one quasi-experimental study.

What did the researchers find?

Overall, women who received foot reflexology showed better breastfeeding outcomes and greater postpartum comfort.

The analysis found significant improvements in:

βœ“ Breastfeeding success
βœ“ Breastfeeding satisfaction
βœ“ Postpartum comfort

The researchers also found reductions in breast pain, tension and heat associated with the onset of breastfeeding.

In simple terms, when the results of the studies were considered together, foot reflexology was associated with greater comfort after birth and more positive breastfeeding outcomes.

The authors concluded that foot reflexology had positive effects on postpartum comfort and breastfeeding outcomes and suggested it may have a role as a supportive complementary approach during postpartum care.

For the reflexology profession, this is encouraging research. Postpartum care is an area where women may benefit from gentle, non-invasive complementary support alongside appropriate maternity and breastfeeding care.

It is important to remember that a meta-analysis is only as strong as the studies it includes. In this case, only three studies were included, so further high-quality, larger-scale research is needed to strengthen the evidence.

Research such as this continues to contribute to the developing evidence base for reflexology and its potential place within complementary and supportive healthcare.

As always, reflexology is a complementary therapy and does not replace appropriate postnatal medical care or professional breastfeeding support.

🌿 REFLEXOLOGY & FIBROMYALGIA 🌿

Living with fibromyalgia can mean dealing with widespread pain, fatigue, poor sleep, muscle tension and days when your body simply feels overwhelmed.

Could reflexology help? πŸ‘£

Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive complementary therapy that focuses on applying pressure to specific areas of the feet.

For some people living with fibromyalgia, a reflexology session may help support:

✨ Relaxation and a calmer nervous system
✨ A sense of wellbeing and self-care
✨ Rest and sleep
✨ Easing feelings of tension
✨ Taking time away from the stresses of everyday life

Everyone experiences fibromyalgia differently, so treatments should always be gentle, individualised and adapted to how you are feeling on the day.

πŸ’š Reflexology is not a cure for fibromyalgia and should not replace medical treatment, but it can be used alongside your usual care as part of a holistic approach to wellbeing.

At Retreat @ the Burrow, your comfort comes first. We take the time to listen, understand how you're feeling and tailor each session accordingly.
