I have my ordering process written down.

I’ve done it hundreds of times. I know how to do it.

But knowing how to do something and my brain remembering every single step, every single time, are two very different things. 😂

So I stopped expecting myself to remember.

I wrote the steps down. I follow them. Done.

And honestly, that’s what a lot of my “systems” look like.

They’re not about turning me into an organised person.

They’re about making things simple enough that I can be chaotic AND capable.

Because if a system can remember something for me, my brain doesn’t have to.

I didn’t know I was a woman with ADHD when my kids were little.

I just knew that something as ordinary as following a recipe could leave me overwhelmed and cross.

Every interruption knocked me out of what I was doing. And because I didn’t understand why I found it so difficult to get back into the task, I blamed myself.

Why can’t I just cook dinner without getting frustrated?

Why can’t I just cope?

What sort of mum gets this cross over an interruption?

Knowing I have ADHD hasn’t magically made my life less chaotic.

But it has helped me stop using those moments as evidence that I’m incompetent or failing.

And that has changed an awful lot.
