Just Little Changes
Alternative lifestyle products that reduce waste and promotes the use of reusable alternatives. Educating about the impact of disposable products.
It's a long time since I've posted anything eco preachy but this is important:
Fast fashion contributes to over 20% of greenhouse gases in the world
Fast fashion clothes are designed to only last for 7 wears. They're made cheaply, cutting corners and will break soon.
The amount of rules and regulations ignored by the fast fashion industry is criminal.
"I can just donate stuff when I buy more" doesn't make it better, no-one wants your out-of-season, cheap cast offs. If they end up "donated" to a third world country, they're likely to be dumped in the sea.
Just because it doesn't have a cheap price tag, doesn't mean it's not cheaply made. Look for long stitches (fast and weak sewing), poor finishing (loose threads etc), thin fabric, polyester blends.
A complex garment that costs less than £50 is made using morally and ethically compromised labour... if it's less than £20 it's straight up slave labour.
Workers in Bangladesh, China, Indonesia etc deserve to earn a living wage in a safe environment, with a work life balance, just as much as workers in the UK.
The price of clothes being so low also effects UK seamstresses like myself, who are constantly expected to make things for the price people are used to paying for off the shelf, sweatshop clothing. Just last week I had a potential client ghost me when I quoted her £100 for a dress she wanted made in a week...
Temu, Shein and their likes are evil. When you buy clothes from them, you are supporting slavery and the blatent flaunting of rules in place to keep our planet habitable for all life.
I know it's so easy to use fast fashion, I'm guilty of going to Primark myself. But try and be a little more conscious in where you spend your money.
🌿 Don't buy outfits you only plan to wear once
🌿 Shop second hand: vinted, charity shops, marketplace
🌿 Go to, and arrange, clothes swaps
🌿 Have a capsule wardrobe
🌿 Learn to make your own, and upcycle what you have
🌿 Delay the purchase: sleep on it and go back next week if you still want it then
This has been my Ted talk. Have a great day!

As the festive (and shopping) season approaches, we're planning on featuring a small business a day to help you find somewhere small, local and ethical to buy your Christmas presents from! Today's featured business is Shared Earth - Fair Trade Products.
"We are a Fair Trade, eco and ethical shop that's been going for 15 years located on Bold Street in Liverpool. We stock gorgeous handmade items, made by some of the poorest artisans in the world. We have a huge range of unique gifts that are unlike anything else on the high street that directly help people in poverty abroad. We also have a refill station and are a drop off point for sanitary products to fight local period poverty."
You can find them on Facebook, on Instagram and on their website: www.sharedearth.co.uk
Please consider buying your gifts from this and other similar small business' this year!
