A Beginner's Guide to Hair Extensions:
Everything You Need to Know.
Thinking about getting hair extensions but don't know where to start? This guide is for you! Hair extensions are a fantastic way to add length, volume, and even a pop of color to your hair, but choosing the right type and taking care of them is crucial for a great result.
1. Understand the Different Types of Hair Extensions
The world of hair extensions is vast, but they generally fall into two categories: human hair and synthetic hair.
Human Hair Extensions: These are made from real human hair. They are the most natural-looking and can be styled with heat tools (curling irons, straighteners) and colored just like your own hair. They are more expensive but also more durable and can last for a long time with proper care.
Common types:
Tape-In: Wefts of hair with a medical-grade adhesive tape at the top are "sandwiched" between your own hair. They are semi-permanent, quick to install, and lay flat against the head.
Clip-In: These are temporary extensions that you can clip in and out yourself. They are perfect for special occasions or for those who want to experiment without a long-term commitment.
Sew-In (Weave): This is a more traditional method where your hair is braided into cornrows, and the wefts of hair are then sewn onto the braids. This is a durable option, especially for thicker hair types.
Micro-Link/I-Tip: Small strands of hair are pulled through a tiny bead or ring, and the extension strand is then inserted into the bead and clamped down to secure it. This method uses no heat or glue.
Synthetic Hair Extensions: Made from synthetic fibers, these are a more affordable option. They hold their style well (e.g., they will remain curly after washing), but they cannot be styled with heat tools and typically do not last as long as human hair.
2. Consult a Professional
Before you buy or apply any extensions, it's highly recommended to consult a professional stylist who specializes in extensions. They can:
Assess your hair type and lifestyle to recommend the best extension type for you.
Help you choose the right color match so the extensions blend seamlessly.
Install the extensions correctly to prevent damage to your natural hair.
3. The Importance of Maintenance
Once you have your extensions, proper care is essential to keep them looking their best and to protect your own hair.
Brushing: Use a special extension brush (usually a soft-bristle brush) and be gentle. Always brush from the bottom up to prevent tangling and pulling.
Washing: Use a sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner. Wash gently and avoid scrubbing the roots where the extensions are attached.
Styling: If you have human hair extensions, you can use heat tools, but always use a heat protectant spray. For sleep, a loose braid or bun can prevent tangling.
Touch-Ups: Depending on the type, you will need to see your stylist for regular maintenance and re-application.
Cost: Quality extensions and professional application can be expensive.
Maintenance: They require more time and effort to maintain than your natural hair.
Damage: If improperly applied or cared for, extensions can cause tension and breakage to your natural hair.
Final Thoughts:
Hair extensions are an investment in your look and your confidence. By doing your research, choosing the right type, and committing to proper care, you can enjoy beautiful, voluminous hair that looks completely natural.
👱♀️ Mesh Integration for my client.
✨ She came to me heartbroken. Her hair loss was due to a harsh chemical treatment and persistent straightening.
🌞 Guess what? She was sorted.
✨ We sort any form of hair loss, so don't panic.
So she ditched the famous lace front closure for my 2012 handmade signature closure (nostalgic). It was nice of her to take me back to the days when the lace front was new to the market and expensive and my clients would rather opt for mine.
