Your due date is an estimate, not a deadline 🤍

Most of us spend pregnancy counting down to one specific date- but did you know that only around 1 in 20 babies are actually born on their estimated due date?

Your initial dates may be calculated from the first day of your last period, traditionally assuming a 28-day cycle and ovulation around day 14. But, of course, not everybody’s cycle works like that.

This is one reason your NHS dating scan is so important. Ultrasound measurements help establish how many weeks pregnant you are and your estimated due date may be adjusted accordingly.

And even with accurate dating, your EDD still can’t tell us the exact day labour will begin.

Pregnancy normally lasts somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks, so arriving before or after that date is very common.

As always, continue following the advice of your maternity team and contact them with any concerns, particularly changes in your baby’s movements.

Skin-to-skin contact is one of the most important first moments after birth.

It can help regulate your baby's temperature, heart rate, breathing and blood sugar levels, whilst also supporting breastfeeding and strengthening the bond between parent and baby.

Available from 10 weeks of pregnancy, NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) is a simple blood test that screens for the most common chromosome conditions, including:

• Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21)
• Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18)
• Patau Syndrome (Trisomy 13)

Optional fetal s*x determination is also available from 10 weeks.

Results are typically returned within 2–5 working days.
