NEW LAW TO PROTECT LIVESTOCK IS ON ITS WAY

Over 10 years ago , officers from North Wales Police Rural Crime team began calling for improved legislation to protect livestock from dog attacks , We have been the lead Force in the UK leading consultations , meetings , evidence providing , attending at London and other parts of the UK to progress the matter . Following several disappointments where the proposed legislation was shelved at the last minute , we together with the Farming Unions have kept pushing for change and last Friday the Dogs (protection of Livestock) (Ammendment) Bill passed its third reading in the House of Lords . Once it has Royal assent , it will become Law

The changes provide better protection and redress for our farmers , These are some of the changes you will see

The new legislation includes Alpacas , Llamas
It broadens the location covered by the law to roads and paths
Fines will be unlimited
Police will be able to seize and retain dogs involved in livestock worrying
It will allow police to take samples for forensic evidence ( we have been leading on this aspect together with John Moores University)
The legislation clarifies the concept of close control , putting the emphasis on prevention rather than recovering ,
Police will be allowed to apply for warrants to enter premises in order to seize and examine dogs

What does this mean to dog owners ? Well although 'close control' remains as part of the legislation , it has been better defined and places greater responsibility on the dog owner who will face greater punishments if their dog worries or attacks livestock .

We will of course provide more information to dog owners when the legislation goes live

We deal with attacks on livestock on a weekly basis and see first hand the utter devastation that can cause to both the farmers and dog owners and despite numbers of livestock attacks reducing here in Wales we feel that this new legislation will go a long way to reducing it even further.
We are proud of the part we as a team have played in helping bring this legislation to where it is and we will make full use of the new powers available to us to help reduce these incidents even further .
