“At 42, I was diagnosed with Stage 2, HER negative, ER+ breast cancer. I remember it like it was yesterday, the bombshell that was dropped from a great height. I'm just thankful I found the lump when I did. Initially, I thought it was just fatty scar tissue, as I had a breast reduction 6 years before.

“After my treatment finished and I was discharged, I was left to go alone until my annual check-up. As elated as I was, I felt very alone and a little lost. The hospital team was my security blanket and that was gone.

“My nurse told me about Breast Cancer Now's Moving Forward course, that can help people after breast cancer. I'm so glad I signed up.

“The course was over a few sessions and was run by a lady who had been through breast cancer herself. It was such a great experience to chat to similar people, ask questions and know you're not alone. It really brought out a lot of feelings I'd probably been holding in through treatment.

“It made me feel comfortable and confident about life post-breast cancer and generally getting used to normal life again.” - Jo

Our Moving Forward courses are safe, friendly spaces to meet similar people and get support on returning to everyday life. You can either sign up to a face-to-face course near you, or join one of our courses online. Read Jo’s story and find out more about Moving Forward.

at its best, telling her story to help other women,

“I was diagnosed in April 2022, while I was training for the Virtual London Marathon. My mammogram was clear. 3 weeks before, I'd found a small lump and the doctor sent me to the breast clinic for peace of mind.

“They found 5 lumps of multifocal lobular which turned out to be 5cm close to the chest wall. It didn't even show up well on MRI. It grows like a spider’s web, so doesn't show up well.

“I had my first mastectomy in June 2022 but kept training. I had my second mastectomy in August after pleading to have it taken off as I couldn't cope with one. I ran the marathon 6 weeks post-operation, 3 days post-radiotherapy.

“This year I ran it again topless to show my mastectomy scars. It had great media coverage. A reel on my Facebook had 1.9 million views in a week, and thousands of comments from women and men globally. If you Google 'Louise Butcher, topless runner' you can read the stories.

“I raise money for my local hospital charity with all my work, and I'm jumping out of a plane on 5 August and doing a topless swim on 12 August encouraging other ladies who've had breast cancer to join me.

“Every day I run topless now to get people talking. It is definitely working.”
