Let’s get a little bit geeky and talk about modern technology in perfumery 🤓

In the past there were no synthetic molecules, and perfumers heavily relied on the distillation process to produce natural essential oils. 

It is a rather barbaric method that destroys tons of flowers to get a small amount of essential oil. 

More, it does not work for all plants. For example, there is no way to extract lily aromas that way.

Thankfully, scientists have come up with a better approach - Headspace Technology.
 
Just put a glass dome on a beautiful flower in its natural environment, capture its scent and carefully recreate it in a lab. Isn’t it fascinating!? 🌺

Perfumers also use a similar technique to recreate the scent of interesting locations and environments.

Smell of a temple? Easy - incense, leather and warm stone.
Aroma at the top of a skyscraper? Sure - ozone, metal and concrete. 

How about a rose in zero gravity aboard a space shuttle? Yes, even this one - a fresher, sweeter and more metallic scent than on the Earth. 👽🌹

Quick question: how does Madonna smell? 

Relax, I am talking about a flower, not a famous singer 😉

Madonna, Casablanca, Stargazer and some more are an important part of the Lily family. 

What makes them so special? 

They produce uncompromisingly beautiful, rich, sweet, and heady scent so popular in perfumery. 

Secret #1: Many lily flowers have scent so subtle that a human nose can’t catch it at all. 

Secret #2: Many perfumes that list Lily as an ingredient don’t have it at all and use a generic combo of white flowers (gardenia, tuberose, etc).

You can smell a heady, and moderately intense lily in our most popular perfume - “High by the Beach”.

Yesterday we received more than a thousand inquiries about our perfume samples. The majority of them refer to the Dreaming Tonka post we made on June 04 - a week before the launch of our Holiday Collection. In that post we asked people to DM us as it was the only option to pre-order samples before the official launch.

A comment from Paulina, our perfumer:

“I am a big advocate of perfumery duets, when you pick two ideas and try to blend them together. In my opinion, the most beautiful blends combine completely opposite things: like hot and cold, light and dark, love and hate, etc. This is very poetic and that is the beauty of this concept.

Nymphaea Moondance is one of such perfumes.

The summer is warm and promising, hopefully we will be back to normal soon. I wanted to create something light and refreshing, a breath of fresh air or a beam of light amid the darkness.

Jasmine tea and water lilies make this happen - in my practice, it is a rare combination that gives a fresh insight into what refreshing means. It is very delicate.

At the same time, I wanted to add a small portion of mystery and depth, some sort of an unexpected twist.

Green mandarin provides a sparky first impression and noble sandalwood tops it with a seductive effect.

Innocence and desire in a head spinning formula. Both compete for your attention and it is hard to tell what part of it attracts you more - the good or the bad. Is it not similar to how love works in real life? 😘

Freedom is the only spice worthy of love!

That’s our moto and source of inspiration when we worked on a personalised perfume for Elina .

Elina is an emerging artist, who bends the reality with her oil painting skills and thinks outside the box. She wanted a sophisticated multidimensional rose fragrance that would fade into a long-lasting woody aroma. 🥀

Elina is also very sensitive to scents, heavy perfume may even give her a headache. We made a very gentle rose perfume with Atlas Cedarwood and Agarwood to dry down and give depth to a velvety rose character. It was in a form of a lightly scented cologne to keep up with Elina’s preferences.

The comment from Paulina, our perfumer:

“…I remember working on Elina’s perfume. Her scent sensitivity is a truly amazing trait. On one hand, you can’t wear strong perfumes as they are too heavy for you. On the other hand, you feel the slightest change in the fragrance mood and experience true immersion in your blend. I would call it a treasure and a curse at the same time 🤔

It all started nice and calm. We had a lovely consultation about perfume requirements and I prepared three samples for evaluation. Usually one or two blends are very close to what a person would love to see in a final blend and we just need to agree on further directions.

Not that time. Each blend was either too strong or not rosy-enough, and it took me around three weeks to make things right and properly balanced. It still haunts me in my dreams! Just kidding 👻😄

I enjoyed working on Elina’s fragrance as it was a real challenge that made me look at things from a different perspective. That was one of those moments when you have to stop and reevaluate your thoughts on things you love and know well.” ❤️🌹

Anastasia's perfume story. ⭐️

Anastasia  is a professional gymnast and a Head Rhythmic Gymnastics Coach .

She loves travelling and wanted a sweet floral perfume to remember her journey to Thailand. 🏝We tried to balance cosy mornings on a beautiful island and no need to rush anywhere with emerald waters, golden temples hidden in the jungles and sweet and spicy food.

We created a composition of delicious mango and papaya to create sweetness, mixed with lush and spicy frangipani, and topped the fragrance with a hint of sea salt and ocean breeze. 🌊🥭

Summer has finally arrived in the UK and it is important to stay hydrated and fresh.

Make sure you drink plenty of water for the former and use Mint for the latter. Why Mint? Because it is a highly aromatic herb giving a cooling sensation. It is also gorgeous and a great companion to start the summer with 🥰

Most people are familiar with the scent and describe it as joyful and uplifting. Let’s get minty 🍵

Peppermint + Geranium + Violet. Classic floral bouquet with a modern twist and a hint of breeze. A light floral summer perfume.

Peppermint + Petitgrain. Super-powerful green note, that can add a fresh grassy feeling to any blend.

Another week, another fragrance topic to cover 🌿

Today we are going to speak about balancing the materials.

Balance in perfumery is the perfect composition, when each material is in the correct proportion to other materials. A marvellous blend that can be simply described like this - nothing more to add, nothing left to take 👏

How to balance materials? There is no perfect established method to check if two, three, or more materials are perfectly balanced, and each perfumer does it differently:

* Some rely on their intuition and first make a complex composition or accord that they believe can smell interesting. Then they try to change it in different ways until they are fully satisfied. 
* Others pick two materials and balance them, then add the third material in different proportions, then the fourth, etc.

Of course, there are other ways to do this, but the result is pretty much always the same - one ends up with tens or hundreds of different combinations to choose from. And this is a good thing! Who does not like to have a choice? 😄

What is important is that any combination can be balanced. Of course, it takes time and can be exhausting, but don’t worry, we are here to do the hard part for you. Have a blend in mind? Let us know, and we will balance it beautifully.
