Navigating the unique currents of same-sex relationships. 🌊✨
While all couples experience periods where their relationship feels like it's sailing on autopilot, same-sex partnerships navigate a unique set of emotional waters. On top of the everyday logistics of managing a life together, there are often unseen layers—navigating external expectations, balancing individual boundaries, or managing different experiences of visibility.
When communication begins to stall, it rarely means the love has faded. More often, it means the "vessel" is navigating unmapped emotional territory without a shared compass.
In psychodynamic couples therapy, we provide a secure, non-judgmental space to look beneath the surface. We explore the deeper attachment patterns, unconscious blueprints, and unique relational strengths that shape your bond, helping you move past defensive distance and back into a deep, resilient emotional connection.
To support you and your partner in checking in with each other privately, we have hosted an interactive reflection tool on our clinical blog: The Uncharted Vessel Worksheet. It is designed to help you step out of routine dynamics and look at your relationship with fresh clarity.

🔒 Confidential Support: We offer specialized, online couples therapy tailored to the unique dynamics of LGBTQ+ relationships. If the themes in the worksheet resonate with your partnership, you are welcome to send us a completely confidential private message (DM) here, or contact our UK practice directly at

🚢 Is your marriage vessel watertight?
In the beginning, it’s just the two of you in a "dinghy." But as life grows, you add cargo: mortgages, children, and careers. If a parent-child dynamic takes over, the "seals" between these areas break, and a fight about chores can flood your entire intimacy.
My new article helps you map your relationship's compartments and find reassurance in what is still working.

I’ve noticed a lot of discussion recently about the rise of therapy apps. As a psychotherapist, I’ve written a short reflection on why these platforms are a great 'nursery' for therapy, but why many professionals eventually feel 'Subscription Fatigue.' I thought this might be a helpful read for anyone currently navigating the digital therapy landscape.

This important contribution by Jessica Yakeley in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis offers a richly documented account of the Portman Clinic’s early history and its role in the development of psychoanalytic approaches to delinquency, violence, and sexual disturbance. Founded in 1933, the Clinic’s pioneering work at the intersection of psychoanalysis and criminology reflects the profession’s broader engagement with social and forensic contexts during a period of profound societal transformation.
Yakeley’s analysis traces the Portman’s evolution through interwar anxieties, wartime disruption, and the postwar emergence of the welfare state—an essential context for understanding how psychoanalytic thought was operationalised in institutional settings.
Highly recommended for clinicians, historians of psychoanalysis, and those interested in the application of psychoanalytic theory to complex social phenomena.
📜 In our History of Psychoanalysis section, Jessica Yakeley explores the founding and early development of the Portman Clinic, a pioneering institution in psychoanalysis and criminology. Established in 1933, the Clinic addressed issues such as delinquency, violence, and problematic sexual behaviors in children, adolescents, and adults. Against the backdrop of interwar Britain, Yakeley traces its evolution through the upheaval of World War II and the emergence of the welfare state.

🌗 Optimism and Pessimism — not just attitudes, but psychic positions shaped by our earliest relationships. One invents the airplane, the other the parachute, as George Bernard Shaw wittily said.
In therapy, hope and despair often emerge not as fixed traits, but as emotional strategies—ways we protect ourselves from unbearable disappointment or dare to imagine reparation.
In my latest Substack piece, I explore what British Psychoanalytic Theory teaches us about these states of mind, and share a clinical vignette about a client whose journey from despair to tentative hope reminded me that optimism isn’t naïveté—it’s a hard-won capacity to desire again.

What is character, really?
Is it strength? Integrity? The choices we make—or the ones we avoid?
In two new Substack posts, I explore character through the lens of British psychoanalytic theory. One features Tom, who never quite chooses. The other introduces Maya, who chooses too much. One is stuck; the other, in overdrive.
Both reveal how character is less a set of traits and more a pattern of emotional survival, shaped in early relationships and played out—often unconsciously—throughout adult life.
