Reflecting on my time in South Africa ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ, I was reminded that wellness isnโ€™t just whatโ€™s on your plate.

Itโ€™s the moments that slow you down, the spaces that hold you, and the presence you invite in. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฆ“๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿชพ๐ŸŒณ

Cold Truths: A Nutritionistโ€™s Perspective on Ice Baths ๐ŸงŠโ„๏ธ

Ice baths, or cold-water immersion, are often praised for their ability to aid muscle recovery, reduce inflammation, and enhance mood through the release of feel-good endorphins. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธโœจ

But while many, myself included, experience benefits, itโ€™s essential to recognize that ice baths arenโ€™t a one-size-fits-all solution and may not be suitable for everyone.

๐Ÿšจ Who Should Be Cautious?

Anyone with a medical condition (for example those with heart disease, Raynaudโ€™s and also pregnant women).

There has also been recent discussion whether women should avoid ice bathing compared to menโ€ฆ

๐ŸŒ€ Key Considerations for Women:

๐Ÿ’ก Hormonal Influences: womenโ€™s immune systems are partially regulated by hormonal fluctuations like estrogen and progesterone. Cold exposure during certain phases of the menstrual cycle (e.g., the luteal phase) might disrupt immune function. A consideration as well is that during the luteal phase (the second half of the menstrual cycle, beginning right after ovulation), a womanโ€™s core body temperature rises by about 0.5-1โ„‰, largely due to the thermogenic effect of progesterone (increasing blood flow to the skin) โ€“ which may exacerbate physiological stress the body is exposed to extreme temperature changes.
๐Ÿ’ก Chronic Use & Overexposure: overdoing ice baths can elevate cortisol (a stress hormone), potentially suppressing immune function and making the body more vulnerable to illness.
๐Ÿ’ก Cold Immune Stress: for women with lower body fat or circulation issues, cold-water immersion may temporarily weaken immune defenses by reducing the effectiveness of white blood cells (WBCโ€™s).

โœจ The Bottom Line: Ice baths can be a fantastic tool for muscle recovery and mood enhancement. However, women should take extra care, considering factors like hormonal fluctuations and individual health. Ultimately, listen to your body, and when in doubt, consult a healthcare professional before taking the plunge! ๐Ÿฉบ

One of the biggest highlights has been seeing the Virtual Wellbeing Clinic grow - not just in numbers, but as a community. โ€จ
Watching our expert practitioners support our lovely clients with holistic, compassionate care and help them feel healthier, more energised, and truly seen has been such a joy to witness.โ€จ
Iโ€™ve also loved getting out into corporate workshops, talking about womenโ€™s health, gut health, fatigue, stress, and mental wellbeing, and sharing my own fatigue journey through talks that bring awareness, education, and hope to those suffering with chronic illness.โ€จ
On top of that, growing our retail activations and seeing our candles bring a little warmth and wellbeing into peopleโ€™s homes was also such a treat.

Iโ€™m so grateful to the organisations, the individuals who shared their stories, and the incredible team who show up with heart and expertise every single day.โ€จ
This post really feels like a snapshot of 2025 - a year full of connection, growth, and creating moments that bring wellbeing and joy to others.โ€จ
Hereโ€™s to a healthy, happy, and purposeful 2026, to all of you lovely lot on here! ๐Ÿค

Yesterday I was asked by the lovely to provide commentary for on Joe Wicksโ€™s recent C4 documentary on ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and in particular the creation of his Killer protein bar, which is not designed for human consumption. โ›”๏ธโ€ผ๏ธโš ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ป

The point of the campaign is clearly to be sensationalist and to get people talking about the ultra-processed foods (UPFs) which are so commonplace in the Western diet today (we know that the UK has one of the highest intakes of UPFs in Europe (around 50-60% of calories come from UPFs).

But there are some important points to consider with this campaign - the first is that the warning โš ๏ธ labels on the protein bar of โ€œmay increase risk of cancer, stroke or early deathโ€ ๐Ÿชฆ๐Ÿ’€are attributed to an associative study of UPFs and a 14% increased risk of premature death, but we donโ€™t definitively know what exactly it is within these UPFโ€™s that is driving up this disease risk - for example, could it be the increased calories, sugar and fat content that are so widespread in many UPFโ€™s?

The claim is slightly reductionist because while there is correlation, this does not mean causation - and we do require more data to understand the nuances about UPFs and how they might impact long-term health and longevity.

Its also important to remember that not all UPFs are created equally - a tin of baked ๐Ÿซ˜beans, fortified plant-based ๐Ÿฅ› milk or oat cake ๐Ÿ˜cracker are far sounder nutritional options than a fizzy ๐Ÿฅคdrink, packet of sweets or ๐Ÿซ chocolate bar (from a protein, fibre and vitamin/mineral perspective), so this documentary could be creating some fear-mongering and a juxtaposition of โ€œgoodโ€ vs โ€œbadโ€ foods - creating confusion and harming peopleโ€™s relationships with food. โš–๏ธโ€จ
I would also question the sustainability angle - I donโ€™t think that itโ€™s a good idea to be mass-manufacturing a product that is specifically targeted to be thrown in the bin - seems pretty wasteful if you ask me! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ

As the sun โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒ… sets on Summertime, Iโ€™m taking a moment to reflect on what keeps me nourished, balanced and feeling my best while on holiday (summer is most definitely my favourite time of year as Iโ€™m my soul is so soothed by โ˜€๏ธ sunshine and summer holidays ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป).

Soaking up the beautiful weather, staying hydrated, moving my body and enjoying fresh seasonal food, while giving my nervous system time to rest and reset.

Itโ€™s all about those little rituals that nourish both body and mind.

Who else is sad to see summer end? (That being said, I am looking forward to cosy ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿฅฎ season upon us - swings and roundabouts hey?! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ™Š)

Working with Rachel over the last year has been such a transformative journey; from her history of battles with endometriosis and a surgically-induced menopause following a hysterectomy, combined with CFS and struggling to function through her day-to-day career; its so lovely hearing words like these on how she has been able to make shifts in her nutrition and lifestyle for the betterment of her health and to further understand her body and its unique requirements for optimising longevity and quality of life. Well done Rachel, for all you have achieved and will continue to do so! ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ’ช
