To celebrate International Women’s Day, we wanted to honour the women of the Iraqi Marshes. A place that is dear to Supper Club’s founder, Ziad Halub.
The Mesopotamian Marshes are located in Southern Iraq and were once the biggest wetlands in the Middle East. In recent history they have been threatened by environmental disasters and climate change - these impacts have affected the ecology and made the area harder to sustain for the local communities that depend on the environment to survive.
At the very beating heart of the Marsh Arab community are the women. They play a pivotal role, in a gendered social landscape, as the main breadwinners (selling goods in the market, making handicrafts etc.) and also primary caretakers of their homes. The men of the Marshes are assigned local, agricultural duties or often go to the cities to seek better prospects when climate disasters like drought befall the region.
An excerpt from the UNPD says:
Um Issa, who lives with her ten children in a modest house built of mud and reed in the Hawizeh Marshes, paints a bleak description of the negative impact of drought and climate change. "When the marshland dries up, we nearly starve because droughts affect humans and animals alike. Men leave the marshland for the cities and seek other jobs in the police force or the army, leaving their families in sordid poverty and hunger, which forces us to shoulder greater responsibilities to support our families.”
In addition, the Mesopotamian marshes are restricted in terms of access to necessities or urban amenities. There is a need for health and educational facilities - as certain children travel upwards of five hours per day to get an education.
The women of this region should be truly celebrated, but should also be supported. At Supper Club, we are donating a portion of our proceeds made in the month of March to support the women of the marshes.

Supper Club Hosts:
Esther Elia is an Assyrian artist who’s art is often inspired by her cultural heritage. Her work focuses on family folklore as the basis for understanding mixed identity, and preservation of oral histories as someone from Assyrian heritage, has led to interest in art that fosters community engagement and historical preservation.
We asked Esther for a series of illustrations inspired by the ancient herbs and plants used in Sabzi - found across the Fertile Crescent.
Early Middle Eastern Christians believed that the pomegranate was the the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden. In fact, its Latin name ‘Malum Granatum’ translates to ‘Grainy Apple’.

October to February is Pomegranate season. In the Middle East, the pomegranate seeds are pressed to a rich oil and used to nourish the skin, the juice is pressed fresh by street vendors, and pomegranate molasses is made for the coming months.
Sabzi uses pure, cold-pressed pomegranate seed oil in its formula to help protect and regenerate the skin - it is high in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as a rich source of punicic acid and omega fatty acids. This unique profile makes pomegranate seed oil incredibly soothing, protective and regenerative - a great ingredient to incorporate during seasonal changes.
