How henna works - 4 step process:

Release: When henna paste is applied to the skin or hair, lawsone molecules are released from the paste.

Diffusion: The lawsone molecules pe*****te the outermost layer of the skin or hair shaft. They are small enough to pass through the cuticle and reach the cortex, which is the layer where the natural pigment of the hair resides.

Oxidation: Lawsone molecules undergo an oxidation process facilitated by enzymes present in the skin or hair. This process involves the lawsone molecules reacting with oxygen from the air.

Binding: Oxidized lawsone molecules form stable bonds with the proteins in the keratin, creating a semi-permanent colour. The resulting colour can range from reddish-brown to orange, depending on factors such as the concentration of lawsone and the duration of application.
