EMULSIFIERS & THE “WASHOUT EFFECT”

Here’s something not many people realise… some moisturisers can actually contribute to ongoing barrier disruption. Emulsifiers are used to blend oil and water together in skincare. That’s completely normal. But their activity doesn’t always stop once the product is on your skin.

When your skin is exposed to water, like when washing your face or showering these emulsifiers can continue to interact with your skin. They may bind to your own natural lipids and wash them away. This is known as the “washout effect.”

Over time, this repeated process can leave the skin barrier more vulnerable. You might notice skin that feels dry again very quickly after moisturising, or that becomes easily irritated, tight, or reactive.

From a corneotherapy perspective, the focus is always on protecting and supporting the skin’s natural barrier function, not interfering with it. That’s why there’s a growing shift toward formulations that work with the skin, using biomimetic lipids and systems that don’t contribute to lipid loss.

It’s a good reminder that not all moisturising is equal and sometimes what feels hydrating in the moment may not support long term skin health.

Barrier repair is not a trend. It’s a biological requirement.

The skin doesn't wake up one day and decide it needs repairing. When we see inflammation, sensitivity, dehydration, impaired healing, redness or chronic skin dysfunction, these are often signs that the skin's natural defence systems are no longer functioning optimally.
Yet in a world obsessed with stronger actives, more aggressive treatments and faster results, barrier repair is sometimes dismissed as a trend.

The reality is quite the opposite. The skin barrier is fundamental to skin health. Without an intact acid mantle, cohesive corneocytes and well organised epidermal lipids, the skin cannot effectively regulate water loss, defend itself against environmental stressors or maintain normal cellular function.

This is why barrier repair sits at the heart of Corneotherapy. Not because it's fashionable. Not because it's popular. But because healthy skin function depends on it. When we support the barrier, we support the skin's ability to do what it was biologically designed to do.

What Is Corneotherapy?
•A skin treatment philosophy focused on repairing and protecting the skin barrier.
•We work WITH the skin, not against it.
•Healthy skin functions better, heals better and ages better.

I’m back from my week off in Cornwall. Glorious weather and fantastic rest and relaxation.
Also, hit the road running on Sunday. Attended the dermavidualsuk conference in London. Really inspiring event. So excited to be able to introduce this skin changing range to you all in August.

Behind the scenes in clinic… 📚✨

While you see the calm, nurturing side of treatments, there’s a whole world of study happening quietly in the background.

Right now, I’m deepening my knowledge in the science of functional skin — understanding why skin behaves the way it does, not just how it looks on the surface. This means I can more accurately identify the root causes behind concerns like sensitivity, ageing, rosacea, and pigmentation… and most importantly, support your skin in a way that truly works long term.

For me, it’s never been about quick fixes. It’s about education, integrity, and giving you results you can trust.

Every course, every late night of study, every note taken… is all for you 🤍

So when you come into clinic, you’re not just receiving a facial — you’re receiving carefully considered, science-backed care tailored uniquely to your skin.

Your skin deserves that level of attention ✨
