Your forties are often when collagen conversations become more relevant.

Not because ageing suddenly starts.
But because skin changes become easier to see.

Fibroblast activity slows.
Recovery becomes less efficient.
Skin becomes less forgiving.

This is exactly why I encourage my patients to focus on collagen banking.
The earlier we begin protecting and preserving collagen, the greater the long-term return.

Healthy skin ageing is not about panic.
It is about preparation.

Start investing in your skin’s collagen today.

A good treatment plan is not measured by the number of treatments you book in for.
It is measured by how intelligently the treatment is done - is it done at the right settings? And then at the right frequency?

I am increasingly convinced that one of the most valuable skills in aesthetic medicine is restraint.

Understanding when to treat.
Understanding when to allow the skin to recover.
And understanding when to do nothing.

Every treatment decision should support long-term healthy skin collagen.
Not simply short-term results.
Sometimes restraint is the treatment.

When people think about ageing, they often think about wrinkles.

When I think about ageing clinically, I think about inflammation. Because inflammation influences almost every pathway associated with accelerated ageing.

It contributes to collagen degradation. It disrupts recovery. It increases oxidative stress. And it accelerates structural decline.

Inflammation itself is not the enemy. Chronic unresolved inflammation is.

One of the most effective strategies for ageing well is focused on reducing the inflammatory burden placed on the skin.

Think about inflammation differently.

People often ask me how I assess skin quality.

The answer is that I rarely begin by looking for wrinkles. Instead I look for:
• Elasticity
• Resilience
• Recovery
• Skin density
• Light reflection

These are often better indicators of structural skin health.

Healthy collagen creates healthy skin behaviour. And healthy skin behaviour creates better long-term outcomes.

Remember to focus on protecting your skin’s collagen.

Over the years I have found that one of the simplest ways to explain skin health is through the idea of collagen banking.

Think of collagen as an asset. Every day you either add to it or take from it.

SPF is a deposit.
Good sleep is a deposit.
Protein is a deposit.
Excess UV exposure is a withdrawal.
Chronic inflammation is a withdrawal.
Treatment overload is a withdrawal.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s about creating more deposits than withdrawals over time. This framework sits at the heart of how I think about how our skin ages. Because great skin is not built through dramatic interventions. It is built through cumulative daily decisions.

One of the things I love to do when I travel is check out local pharmacies….I was recently in the US and here are a few products that caught my eye.

✔️ Melatonin Gummies
✔️ Airborne Immune Support
✔️ Zicam Intense Sinus Relief - great if you get congested a lot
✔️ Neosporin Antibiotic Ointment

And just a reminder that whilst many over-the-counter products can be helpful, they're not all suitable for everyone. It's always worth checking the ingredients and making sure they're appropriate for your individual needs, particularly if you're pregnant, taking medication or have underlying medical conditions.

Have you tried any of these? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

The beauty industry has spent decades teaching us to focus on wrinkles. But wrinkles are simply one visible manifestation of deeper structural changes.

The real conversation should be about collagen. Because collagen influences almost every aspect of skin quality. It affects how skin moves. How skin reflects light. How skin heals. How skin ages.

This is why my clinical approach begins with structure. When you support structure, many of the visible concerns people worry about become easier to address.

The goal isn’t fewer wrinkles. The goal is healthier skin architecture. Think beyond wrinkles.

One of the most important questions I ask when creating a treatment plan is: Will this support healthy collagen five years from now?

Collagen stimulation is valuable. But only when it respects the biology of the skin. Too often, people assume more heat, more energy or more injury automatically leads to better outcomes. Yet great skin depends on balancing stimulation with recovery.

The future of regenerative aesthetics isn’t about pushing skin harder. It’s about working with skin more intelligently.

Every treatment should be evaluated not only by what it achieves today, but by what it means for your skin’s collagen tomorrow. Protect collagen. Don’t just stimulate it.

One of the most empowering concepts in skin health is understanding the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic ageing.

Intrinsic ageing is inevitable.
It is influenced by genetics, hormones and the natural passage of time.

Extrinsic ageing is different.
It is driven by factors such as:
• UV exposure
• Smoking
• Pollution
• Poor sleep
• Chronic inflammation
• Glycation

This distinction matters because while we cannot control intrinsic ageing completely, we can influence many of the factors that accelerate extrinsic ageing. My approach has always been rooted in helping patients focus on what can be controlled.

Because great skin is not about perfection. It’s about making better decisions consistently. Protect what you can control.

One of the challenges with collagen decline is that it happens gradually. We lose 1% of collagen in our skin every year from our mid twenties onwards…. There is rarely a single moment when skin suddenly changes. Instead, the process of collagen loss happens quietly over years.

Fibroblast activity slows.
Collagen production declines.
Recovery becomes less efficient.
That is why I encourage patients to think proactively rather than reactively.

The earlier we begin supporting collagen, the easier it becomes to preserve healthy glowing skin. Great skin is ultimately all about consistency.
