The importance of folic acid in the first trimester of pregnancy!
Folic acid is very important in the first trimester of pregnancy, especially during the first few weeks when the baby’s brain and spinal cord are developing.
🌸 Why folic acid is important
* Prevents neural tube defects: It significantly reduces the risk of serious problems such as spina bifida and anencephaly.
* Supports the baby’s brain and spinal cord: The neural tube develops very early—often before a woman knows she is pregnant.
* Helps form DNA and new cells: Rapid cell division occurs during early pregnancy, so adequate folate is essential.
* Supports the formation of red blood cells: It helps prevent folate-deficiency anaemia in the mother.
* Supports healthy growth and development: Folate contributes to the normal development of the placenta and baby.
💊 How much is usually recommended?
For most women, the recommended dose is 400 micrograms (400 µg) of folic acid once daily, ideally starting before conception and continuing until the end of the 12th week of pregnancy.
Some women need a higher dose of 5 mg daily, for example those with certain risk factors such as a previous pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect or certain medical conditions/medications. This should be prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Important: Folic acid is most effective when taken before pregnancy and during the first 12 weeks, because the neural tube develops very early.
NB: if you know that you are trying for conception, you should start taking folic acid one tablet every morning and when you get pregnant, continue until your pregnancy is 12 weeks and then stop.
It’s very important.
