Last week I finished 21 days of practicing traditional sun salutations with mantra. My practice has been sporadic over the last year or so due to personal reasons, other life priorities, and I missed it and needed something to anchor me back into it. Spring had arrived in London, so I took myself off to the park with my matt in the hope of getting out of my head and back into my body.
At first I felt self conscious practicing outside, also daunted and anxious mentally by learning the mantras for each move, and physically having a sluggish system after winter months.
At first my Vata / Pitta nature questioned, wandered and judged in qual measure my choice to practice outside and between each move if I didn’t remember every mantra; the first few days I was completely in my head and hardly in my body.
However, something happened as the days went by; my breath settled into the steady hatha yoga rhythm; instead of judgement I smiled equally when I got the mantra right, half right or wrong; my body began to feel more fluid, stable and stronger; my mind started to take a step back and with feeling the sun on my face, hearing the breeze and the birds in the trees, my senses stepped forward.
The voice of Yogarishi Vishvketu led me each day through the traditional sun salutations. His teaching, his kindness always brings me to a place of calm and joy no matter the mood I start with. I stayed at the Akhanda Yoga Ashram years ago and it’s a place and memory that touches my heart. His voice always takes me back to that feeling.
Half way through the 21 days the repeating of each mantra internally began to flow more naturally, the translated meaning became felt, and my anxious and self critical mind began to quieten. Sun salutations work on the manipura chakra, benefits include strengthening will power, and transformation using the fire element. The repetition and grounded pace anchored my Vata energy and the fire shifted stagnant Kapha judging by my increased mucus clearing!
I am not finishing this post with any great revelation or directive. Only sharing that these 21 days of continuous practice of traditional yoga really helped me. I never learnt until now the mantras which accompany each movement, their sound and meaning. They transformed the practice into something else, a deeper mind, body, spirt connection which is the whole point! There are many forms of yoga and for me the science of traditional yoga which balances the doshas is the one for me and the form I seem to gain most benefit from. In such a time poor, chaotic and ever speeded up modern life, the steadiness of the practice and taking time to connect with nature for 30 minutes, honour the powerful sun through mantra definitely rejuvenated me and not sure why I am writing this other than it may resonate with a you too if you are feeling a bit stuck.
