By using facial muscles repeatedly, the skin becomes creased in areas of greatest use. The ageing process causes the slow down of collagen and elastin production in the skin and as we get older, the areas of over-use become damaged and lines become permanent.

If we reduce the movement of muscles in these overused areas, the skin stops becoming creased and is allowed to recover, causing the lines to soften and possibly even fade away.

As we grow older our skin loses moisture and elasticity
and begins to show signs of ageing. As a result of this
the skin develops fixed lines and depressions which are
characteristic of an ageing face. The most common areas
affected are the nasiolabial folds (between the nose
and mouth) and the marionette lines (downward lines
from the corners of the mouth). In addition, from the
age of 30, the cheek areas of our face lose volume
due to fat loss and collagen depletion. The jawline
become less defined.

Photodamage is caused by ultraviolet radiation in the forms of UVA and UVB. It can occur during direct sunlight or as a result of year round daylight.

UVA penetrates deep into the dermis and damages the skin, even on cloudy days and in the winter. UVA accelerates ageing, causes pigmentation problems and can damage cells leading to skin cancer.

UVB only penetrates the upper epidermal layer, and is more prevalent on sunny days and in the summer. It tans the skin and causes sunburn. UVB is more likely to cause damage to cells leading to skin cancer. It is therefore important to use a sunblock that protects against UVA and UVB and has a SPF of at least 30.

The most important skin care product to use is a sunblock that has numerous long-term benefits. Not only is it proven to slow down the ageing process so you have less lines and wrinkles, but it also helps prevent pigmentation and most importantly reduces the risk of skin cancers in later life.

ESS Clinic recommend a range called Heliocare. This brand contains an antioxidant called Fernblock which provides extra protection for your skin.

This lady’s main concerns were that she looked tired and sad when looking in the mirror. Notice the prominent nasolabial folds and down turning of the angles around her mouth.

Her mid face has been treated first to give structure and definition. 2mls of Juvederm Voluma has been used in the cheek area to provide a lifting effect. This has resulted in improvement to the areas of concern.

Anti wrinkle injections were also administered in the forehead and glabella area to give a smoother appearance to these areas.

A follow up appointment has been scheduled in 8 weeks time for further treatment on the lower face to improve the marionette lines and jawline definition.
