You can only choose ONE…

Which period would you absolutely love to feel completely confident creating?

Mine would be impossible to choose 😂

When I recreate a historical hairstyle, I’m not trying to copy every visible curl.

I’m trying to understand why it looks the way it does.

I break the reference down into silhouette, direction, texture and foundation.

Once you understand those things, you’re no longer dependent on finding a tutorial for every hairstyle you want to create.

You can look at a completely new reference and begin working out how to build it yourself.

That’s the skill I want stylists to develop.

Comment below which part you find hardest to work out from a photograph?

When I’m looking at a period hairstyle, the first thing I study is the silhouette.

Where is the height?
Where is the width?
Where does the weight of the hair sit?
What’s happening around the ears, crown and nape?

You can create beautiful curls and technically perfect braids, but if the overall shape is wrong, the hairstyle won’t read correctly.

This is the difference between copying what you see and understanding how the hairstyle has been constructed.

Learn to see the shape first.
Then work out how to build it.

Save this is you can relate.

Period styling for brides is one of the most overlooked areas in the bridal market today.

It’s in demand, timeless and very few people are doing it well.

This is the bit I think gets missed when we look at elaborate historical hairstyles.

We’re looking at the finished hair.
But underneath it is construction.
The placement of the foundation determines where the volume sits.
The direction of the hair determines the movement.
And the silhouette has to be established before all those beautiful finishing details are added.

If you understand the construction underneath the hairstyle, the finished result becomes much easier to create.

Save this if you’d like to see more complete period hairstyles from start to finish.

The secret isn’t the style. It’s the silhouette.
Most stylists focus on the detail.
The stylists who create truly authentic period work focus on the shape.
In this 1960s-inspired updo, the petal shapes are deliberately wider at one end and taper into the tuck. That subtle shift creates elegance, movement and the distinctive silhouette that defined the era.
Keep the width the same all the way through and the shape becomes heavy, static and loses its authenticity.
These are the details that separate recreating a look from understanding it.

October already. 🍂
And somehow this feels like about five minutes ago.

Sunset swims, salty hair, kids permanently hungry, too many late nights and absolutely no idea what day of the week it was.

Now we’re back to alarms, school bags, work, dark evenings and asking everyone where their bloody coat is.

I love autumn.

But I’d go back here tomorrow. ❤️
Roll on next summer.

What 20 years in film taught me about bridal hair:

Hair doesn’t just need to look beautiful.

It has to survive long days, close-up cameras, continuity checks and multiple takes while still looking intentional.

That changes the way you build it.

Structure before finish.
Technique before trends.

Most stylists are taught how to recreate looks.
Far fewer are taught how to understand the architecture underneath them.

That’s why period techniques remain some of the strongest foundations for modern bridal styling.
Because when you understand structure, you stop copying and start creating work people recognise as yours.

One of the biggest things working in film taught me was that good hair takes proper preparation.

We were given time to create the style properly for a reason.

If that time got interrupted or we had to rush, you knew you were potentially in for a nightmare because you’d spend the rest of the day chasing that hairstyle. Repinning. Reshaping. Trying to keep it looking exactly as it did when the actor first stepped onto set.

The foundation was everything.

And it’s exactly the same with bridal hair.

Those extra few minutes spent getting your foundations, direction and structure right can save you SO much time and stress later.

Good technique doesn’t slow you down.

It gives you control.

Most stylists don’t struggle because they’re not good enough.

They struggle because clients can’t see a clear reason to choose them over everyone else.

Specialist skills change that.

In my free masterclass, I explain how period styling helped me build a career across film, television and bridal and why it’s still one of the most overlooked opportunities in the bridal industry today.
