It highlights not only the ongoing lack of regulation, and no aesthetics licensing scheme, but the incredible risk patients are being put at by this and some surgical loopholes - whereby any GMC-registered doctor can legally perform cosmetic surgery - which need immediate attention.⁠

💡 You may have seen this talking point online recently, around masseter botox causing jowls and sagging in the lower face. But is it true? Not really, although it's based in fact.⁠
⁠
⭐️ This is a great example of why patient selection, understanding contraindications and possible risk factors, plus tailored treatment planning approaches are key for all aesthetic practitioners.⁠
⁠
❌️ If your patient has youthful, elastic skin, masseter toxin is unlikely to cause jowling⁠
⁠
📉 But where your patient is older, has skin laxity, collagen loss and/or pre-existing jowling, masseter botox may exacerbate this lower face sagging. This is because you're shrinking the muscle that was essentially acting as scaffolding, allowing for this downward shift⁠
⁠
💉 So what do you do if this happens to your patient? A multimodal approach is usually best, addressing jowling with filler or a stimulatory treatment such as Profhilo Structura⁠
