👁️ Cannabis & Glaucoma: Lowering Eye Pressure?

Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease that damages the optic nerve and is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide.

A major risk factor is elevated IOP (intraocular pressure) — the pressure created by fluid inside the eye. Reducing IOP remains a key target in glaucoma management.

Research dating back to the 1970s demonstrated that cannabinoids can reduce IOP, helping to spark decades of scientific interest in the relationship between the endocannabinoid system and eye health.

Cannabinoids are thought to exert these effects through interactions with cannabinoid receptors present in ocular tissues, influencing fluid dynamics within the eye.

Today, researchers continue to investigate the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids and cannabinoid-based medicines for glaucoma and other ophthalmic conditions.

🔬 Key takeaway:
Cannabinoids have been shown to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP), a major risk factor associated with glaucoma progression.

🇬🇧 The UK’S Medical Cannabis Paradox

The UK is a global heavyweight in legal cannabis production, harvesting around 110 tonnes annually according to official INCB data.

Yet UK medical cannabis patients still rely heavily on imported flower.

How can both be true?

The answer lies in what the UK actually produces.

The vast majority of cannabis cultivated in the UK is not destined for patients as dried flower. Instead, it is processed into pharmaceutical extracts and prescription medicines such as Epidyolex.

When international bodies report UK production figures, they convert these finished medicines back into their cannabis flower equivalent, which is why the UK’s production tonnage appears so high.
Meanwhile, demand for medical cannabis flower continues to grow.

Because domestic cultivation has historically focused on extraction and pharmaceutical manufacturing, the UK has not produced enough dried flower to meet patient demand.

As a result, the UK imported a record 30.1 tonnes of medical cannabis flower in 2024, with major supplies arriving from countries including Canada and Portugal.

In short:
🌱 The UK grows cannabis.
🏭 The UK processes cannabis into medicines.
📦 The UK exports cannabis-derived pharmaceuticals.
✈️ The UK imports much of the flower used by UK patients.

That may now be changing, with UK and British Crown dependency cultivators scaling up EU-GMP flower production for the domestic market.

THE WORLD’S MEDICAL CANNABIS POWERHOUSES 🌍🍁

Medical cannabis is now produced legally in dozens of countries around the world, supporting patient access, scientific research, and regulated healthcare programmes.

According to the latest data published by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), global legal medical cannabis production stood at approximately 549.2 tonnes. 📊

Canada remains the world’s largest producer, followed closely by the United Kingdom. Emerging powerhouses like Portugal, Uruguay, Australia, Colombia, Denmark, and South Africa have also solidified their positions as significant global producers. 🇨🇦🇬🇧🇵🇹🇺🇾🇦🇺🇨🇴🇩🇰🇿🇦

While these top 8 powerhouses dominate the market, the remaining tonnage is produced by smaller, emerging licensed nations scattered across Europe, Africa, and South America. 🗺️🌐

📈 From a niche treatment option a few decades ago to a worldwide medical sector producing hundreds of tonnes annually, the scale of change has been remarkable.

The “Mother” of All Cannabinoids? 🌿👇

Ever wonder where THC and CBD actually come from? Meet CBG (Cannabigerol)—often called the “stem cell” or the mother of the cannabis plant.

Here is the science behind how it works:

The Raw Form (CBGA): In the living plant, it actually starts as CBGA (the “A” stands for acid). This is the raw, unactivated version. Once the plant is harvested and exposed to heat or light, that “A” drops off, and it transforms into the active CBG we use!

The Transformation: Special plant enzymes take that CBGA and convert it into the building blocks for THC, CBD, and CBC.

The Final Form: When the plant gets heat or UV light, those compounds lock into the cannabinoids we know today.

The Fine Print:
Because the plant converts almost all its CBGA into other things, mature plants usually contain less than 1% CBG! It’s rare, powerful, and completely distinct.

While it creates THC inside the plant, consuming CBG will not turn into THC inside your body, and it won’t get you high. It has its own unique wellness benefits!

Alcohol in moderation is a personal choice enjoyed responsibly by millions of people.

Yet it’s also linked to significant health and social harms, including addiction, liver disease, certain cancers, domestic violence, and road deaths.

Meanwhile, cannabis has recognised medical applications in dozens of countries and has never been associated with a recorded fatal overdose.

Maybe the real question isn’t why people choose cannabis…

It’s why alcohol gets a free pass?

🌍 THE WORLD IS GOING GREEN 🟢

Just a few decades ago, legal access to medical cannabis was limited to a handful of countries.

Today, more than 50 countries have introduced medical cannabis programmes, giving millions of patients access to cannabis-based medicines under the supervision of healthcare professionals.

From Canada and the Netherlands in the early 2000s to the UK, Australia, Germany, Portugal, Thailand, Brazil and many others, the global shift towards medical cannabis continues to grow.

While laws, qualifying conditions and access pathways differ from country to country, one trend is clear:

📈 Medical cannabis is becoming increasingly recognised as a legitimate therapeutic option around the world.
