As some of you know, this little one has been ill. Ava has lymphoma. It’s definitely not early stage, but also not late stage. There’s hope in that. I was in clinic in London over the last few weeks and she was in and out of the emergency vet care. It was abysmal. A story for another time but we are now back in France where she is getting excellent care. I don’t know how much time we have left with her. But we are hoping treatment will give her a little more good quality time. So many of you have asked about how she’s doing so I wanted to get this out there. She’s not well, but there’s hope. A little. She is the magic that got me through the loss of our Blitz and we are just not ready. Cosmo knows somethings wrong and he’s being very protective of her. It’s very sweet. If you’ve recently seen me in clinic or over a remote consultation, you may have noticed that my roots are grey. That’s not an accident or because I’ve been too busy to book in to do my hair; I am growing my grey hair out.

Many things brought me to this point; I have been colouring my hair for more years than I can remember, and, at 57, I’ve finally had had enough of endless dying and finding my hair breaking in small clumps resulting in bald patches around my temples, and want to embrace the beauty of this era of my life.

We are always told that grey hair makes you look older, that it should be resisted, but this is pure ageism, binding many into a routine that takes up lots of time and money… for what? I keep seeing women with grey hair who look modern and cool and completely comfortable with their appearance. I wanted that for myself.

So much of my work involves making people feel their best, whatever their age, to help them achieve healthy, glowing skin that they are proud of at every life stage. This is my hair version of that: a beautiful head of hair, just not quite the same one I had at 20.

There’s another thing that’s made me happy to see silky white hair emerge from my head. I lost my mum when I was very young, and had two amazing grandmas who I spent a lot of time with. One of them, Grandma Lola, was badass her entire life, someone who shed patriarchal shackles as she aged, divorcing in her 60s during a time when that was unheard of. And, you guessed it, she had beautiful, soft white hair I’d wrap around my fingers when I was a little girl, looking up to this incredibly strong and vibrant woman.

That I get to grow older, that I get to hopefully be that figure for others, and that I’m boldly stepping into this next phase of my life is something I am celebrating. And every inch of white hair reminds me that there is beauty in every year we get to live on this earth.
