I’m Larne, I’m 21 and today I officially completed my business admin apprenticeship!
When I started at Benedict Hair and Beauty I was enrolled on a Hairdressing Apprenticeship. During my time as an assistant I would cover reception, take photos and post for social media and do more ‘adminny’ jobs...after a few months I came to the realisation that my passion for Hairdressing had subsided and it was causing me to be very anxious/nervous which was causing a negative impact on me and my development. At this point, I felt very apprehensive and didn’t want to leave the salon, so I worked up the courage to tell my manager and trainer and I’m so glad I did! After some deliberation my manager created a new role for me. Within a few months I was responsible the Front of House as well overlooking the social media. Now over 2 years have passed and I feel I have excelled more than I deemed possible. I work very closely with my manager, which not many people get the opportunity to do, and I feel I have learnt so many valuable lessons that will help me personally and professionally. Sometimes it’s difficult for me to visualise where heading or count the achievements I’ve made. But knowing that opportunities have been made available just for me, makes me proud, excited and grateful.
To anyone that finds themselves believing in a career and then ends up not liking it, it’s not the end of the world. You can be 16, 21, 30, 50 and realise you enjoy a different career path than the one you’re on. Believe in yourself, fall and get back up, and do what is right for your mind and soul. Have positive energy surround yourself with good pals and positive things will come to you.
This may be the end of my apprenticeship but I will be bringing GREAT things to Benedict Hair and Beauty and I can’t wait to share them with you all. Cya for now! 🤙🏼

Hi, I’m Nicki - the senior hair apprentice Benedict Hairdressing! I’ve been working for Benedict’s since June 2017. I decided to start my apprenticeship straight after finishing school - I always knew I wanted to do something creative and hands on. During school I was stuck between working in a nursery and being a hairdresser - but like Chloe I was put off being a hairdresser as I was told I was too smart for the job by one of my teachers, and a few of my school friends.
When I first begun my apprenticeship, there was a LOT of cleaning, sweeping, and washing clients hair, which continued for what felt like months on end, as I was training and getting used to my surroundings - so through experience I can say you have to be very dedicated to get through all of the boring things first!
When I joined Benedict’s, there was 5 other apprentices who started with me, however they slowly begun to leave which left just me and a couple of other girls. In addition to this, I was very quiet and reserved compared to some of the other people who work in the salon. In November / December 2017, I got in my head that I didn’t want to work in Benedict’s anymore, and every silly little reason I could think of was convincing me to leave and find a salon elsewhere to work at. However, through support from my manager Benedict Hairdressing Academy , and my trainer , I decided to stay working in the salon, and I am so glad I didn’t leave, as I would have missed a massive opportunity in my life! Now, a year on from then I have been on Two makeup courses, am a HD makeup artist at the salon, helped on countless photo shoots - one that involved travelling to London, and recently took part by colouring and styling my very own model at our own salon soiree this year! I am also now servicing my own clientele which makes me feel very involved by being able to bring money into the salon! I have now learned that you don’t have to be the most loudest person to be a hairdresser, you can just be yourself and not change to fit into the stereotypes people have about hairdressers, and with dedication and support, you can become the hairdresser you want to be!

When I decided to tell people that I wanted to become a hairdresser I received quite a lot of negativity and was told numerous times ‘you can do better than that’. Although we shouldn’t let other people’s opinions affect us, peoples words can be very influential especially when you are younger and are trying to find the right career path. This made me doubt my decision and led me to go to college and follow the crowd.
The year and a half I spent at college doing something I was uninterested in made me realise how passionate I am about hairdressing and helped me understand I shouldn’t force other people’s opinions to dictate my happiness. I applied for an apprenticeship at Benedict’s and was really surprised at what was involved. I wasn’t expecting it to be such hard work, the training is super intensive, it requires a lot of intelligence and skill and you have to be extremely dedicated. People have many misconceptions about hairdressing, it is definitely not as glamorous as people may believe. Hairdressers are very committed to their work, they work unsociable hours, become full time counsellors, work on their feet all day, hair dye ruined wardrobes, everyday aches, cuts, burns, the lot, all to ensure their clients feel confident and beautiful!
Despite the hard work, my apprenticeship has reaffirmed my passion for hairdressing and made me want to succeed even further.
For anyone deciding on a career path, always remember if you are passionate and dedicated about something then don’t let others people’s opinions affect you, your happiness is down to you! Remember that you always have to really work for what you want, nothing comes easy, everyone has to work their way from the bottom to the top.
Anyone in similar situations/ needing advice or even just a lil chat our DMs are always open! - Chloe 😘
