Common discussion with clients regarding posture and pain or injury.

There’s no single “perfect” posture, and sitting or standing a certain way doesn’t automatically cause pain or injury.

Your body is designed to move, adapt and tolerate different positions.

Rather than constantly trying to “fix” your posture, focus on building a body that can cope with the demands you place on it.

Get stronger. Move regularly. Change positions.

Strength training improves your capacity to tolerate load and is far more useful than spending all day worrying about whether you’re sitting perfectly straight.

Your best posture? Your next posture. 💪

Client discussion this week….🦈 Lactic acid has a worse reputation than sharks! 😂

For too long, lactic acid has been blamed for the muscle pain and soreness we experience after exercise.

But it’s not the culprit.

During hard exercise, lactate levels rise, but your body clears and reuses it efficiently. It isn’t hanging around for days making your muscles sore.

That soreness you feel 24–72 hours later (DOMS) is linked to your body’s response to unfamiliar or demanding exercise (muscle damage, inflammation ,repair/remodelling)

💆 And another myth… massage doesn’t “flush out lactic acid”.

By the time you’re having a post-exercise massage, your body is already doing an excellent job of clearing and recycling lactate itself.

Massage may help you feel better, reduce the perception of soreness and aid relaxation/recovery, but squeezing lactic acid out of your muscles isn’t how it works.

So next time someone blames their sore legs on “lactic acid” or says they need a massage to flush it out…….

Leave the lactate alone. It’s suffered enough. 😂

Always rewarding to receive messages from clients who are already feeling the benefits of treatment and reassurance, and can now move forward positively with their exercise plan. 💪🏻

Assess • Reassure • Treat • Progress 🧡

Client discussions this week raised an important point…

Sometimes the most valuable part of treatment is knowing you’re OK to move.

As previously stated, pain doesn’t always mean damage, and an assessment doesn’t always need to find something “wrong”.

Good Sports Therapy can provide understanding, reassurance and confidence to move again.

Assessment ➡️ Reassurance ➡️ Confidence ➡️ Movement ➡️ Recovery 💪

Sometimes hearing “You can move safely, here’s the plan” is where recovery really starts.

If you need an injury assessment, or simply some advice about a pain or niggle, comment, DM or text 07725 692679 to book a session.

Bit of a longer read, based upon a number of discussions with clients over the past week.

Pain doesn’t always mean damage 🧠💥

One of the most important things to understand when recovering from an injury is that pain and tissue damage aren’t always the same thing.

Pain is produced by the nervous system. When tissue is injured, your body sends signals to the brain, which then decides how much protection is needed.

That means you can sometimes have:

➡️ Pain without significant ongoing tissue damage
➡️ Tissue damage with surprisingly little pain
➡️ Pain that continues after the tissue has largely healed

Why can pain continue?

After an injury, the nervous system can become more sensitive. The body is essentially trying to protect you.

Movements or loads that previously felt completely normal may temporarily feel painful or uncomfortable.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve damaged the tissue again.

So what does this mean for rehabilitation?

Recovery isn’t simply about waiting for the pain to disappear.

The aim is to gradually rebuild strength, movement, confidence and tolerance to load.

That might mean progressing from:

Gentle movement → strengthening → increased loading → faster movement → sport-specific activity

The nervous system needs to learn that these movements and loads are safe again.

One important takeaway 👇

Pain is real — but pain doesn’t always mean you’re causing more damage.

Understanding this can help you avoid the cycle of:

Pain → fear → avoiding movement → reduced strength → reduced confidence → more sensitivity

Instead, appropriate rehabilitation can gradually build:

Capacity + confidence + tolerance = better recovery 💪

If you’re struggling with persistent pain or returning to activity after an injury, the answer isn’t always simply “rest until it stops hurting.”

Sometimes the key is understanding what the pain is telling you and how to progressively work with it.
