Come with me while I donate blood and show you just how simple the process really is…
When you arrive, you’ll check in and complete your donor health questionnaire.
Once handed in you can go grab your,
Free biscuits and a drink! 🍪🥤
Next up is the little finger prick and haemoglobin check.
This makes sure your haemoglobin level is high enough for you to safely donate.
Then it’s through to the main donation room, where you’ll get comfortable in one of the donation chairs.
Your arm is cleaned thoroughly, the needle goes in, and then you can sit back and relax while your donation is collected. 🩸
Once you’re finished, it’s over to the refreshment area, another drink and, most importantly, choosing your treat from the trolley. 😂🍪
You stay there for a little while, and once you’re feeling well and ready, you’re free to go.
And that’s it.

👶🏻 My blood is O negative and suitable for neonatal use.
You might notice “NEO” on some blood bags.
This means there was no evidence of CMV (cytomegalovirus) infection when the donor was last tested.
CMV is incredibly common and usually harmless in healthy adults, but it can cause serious problems for newborn babies whose immune systems are still developing.
Blood intended for newborns therefore has additional requirements and testing.
🩸 Why is O negative blood so important?
O negative red blood cells can be given to people of any blood group, which is why they’re so important in emergencies when there may not be time to establish somebody’s blood type.
Only around 8% of the UK population has O negative blood, yet it accounts for around 13% of hospital requests for red blood cells.
And some neonatal blood products are specifically made using O negative donations.
Knowing that something my body can simply replace could potentially help save the life of a tiny newborn baby is pretty incredible. 👶🏻❤️

Chyna Hickman, forever 23 ✨🪽👼
As a lash technician and a self-employed mum, I stand with Chyna’s family, friends and loved ones during this unimaginable time.
Being self-employed can be incredibly difficult.
We welcome complete strangers into our homes, studios and salons, often working alone.
Most clients arrive as strangers and leave as friends, but sadly, there are sometimes people who do not respect our time, boundaries or booking policies.
We are only human.
Sometimes we run behind, make mistakes, double-book appointments, forget things or simply have a bad day.
None of these things should ever put our safety or our lives at risk.
Chyna was a lash technician working from home. After having a quiet day, she shared a lash offer on social media and became busier than expected, causing her appointments to run behind.
A disagreement reportedly followed with a client who requested the return of her $15 deposit.
Chyna was tragically shot and killed.
Her unborn baby also lost their life.
No appointment, misunderstanding, delay or disagreement should ever end in violence.
My heart breaks for Chyna’s husband, her two young children, her family and everyone who loved her.
