My wonderful cousin Cemal was someone who treated everyone he met like family. He was never too shy to say “I love you” or give someone a hug if he thought someone needed it.

Cem was punched by 22 year old Royal Marine Joseph Jones in a completely unprovoked attack, the sentence given was 2 years and 4 months in prison, with the remainder of the sentence served on licence.

Part of the reasoning was that at 22 his brain is not fully mature. But how can someone be considered mature enough to serve their country, vote, drink and drive, yet not mature enough to be fully accountable for their actions when those actions take a life?

Cemal should still be here living his life. He should be turning 30 this year.

Instead, our family now has to live the rest of our lives without him.

Right now the only thing we can do as a family is continue to talk about Cemal and share his story, so people understand what has happened and how unfair this feels.

Cemal deserved to still be here living his life, and we can only hope that something more can be done so that a life lost in this way is never treated so lightly again.
