10 mistakes secretly ruining your hair (and what to do instead)

Washing hair too often
🧴 Strips natural oils → dryness + frizz
✨ Instead: Wash 2–3x a week, use dry shampoo in between

Skipping heat protector
🔥 Breakage, split ends, dull colour
✨ Instead: ALWAYS use heat protection — even with or without a blow dry

Using box dye at home
🎨 Uneven colour, banding, long term damage, added metal salts which create chemical reactions with bleaching
✨ Instead: Professional colour = customised formulation + hair health. Permanent colour only when covering greys otherwise semi permanent is the way to go

Brushing from root to ends
😫 Causes snapping + tears through knots
✨ Instead: Start at the ends and work up gently with a gentle brush and preferably on dry hair! Wet hair is more prone to snapping

Sleeping with wet hair
💤 Breakage + scalp issues. Hair is in its most fragile state when wet and over time you can indeed get a build up of mould in your hair if left wet regularly.
✨ Instead: Dry before bed with a hairdryer then use a silk scrunchy & bonnet or silk pillowcase

Using the wrong shampoo for hair type
🧪 Wrong pH = buildup, greasy roots or dry ends
✨ Instead: Diagnose hair first with your hairstylist → moisture, protein, colour-safe etc.

High heat styling weekly
🔥 Cumulative damage
✨ Instead: Lower heat, less passes, use heatless styles weekly or hairdryer instead of hot tools

Neglecting regular trims
✂️ Split ends travel up = more cut off later
Curly hair especially are more prone to getting split ends
✨ Instead: Trim every 8–12 weeks

Tying hair up too tight
💥 Causes tension + hairline thinning
✨ Instead: Use soft scrunchies + alternate styles

Over-using purple shampoo
💜 Can dull hair + create metallic tones
✨ Instead: Use a clarifying shampoo and a toning hair mask (O&M Clean tone is perfect)
