There’s been a lot of controversy recently around makeup artists and what we should be charging our clients... Below I’ve costed how much on average it costs me a week to keep my business going with a detailed breakdown to help give you an idea of a makeup artists overheads. Obviously this will differ between different types of makeup artists, but as a freelancer, my costs as follows...

Incoming
▪️Clients (average 7 on a Saturday at £35 a face) = £245

Outgoing
▪️Room rent for the studio per week and an average weekly break down of the studio’s maintenance (cost of chairs, mirrors, and other furniture etc. incl. cleaning supplies. £40
▪️National minimum wage - £64.80 (9 hours in salon with clients + cleaning at the end of the day)
▪️National minimum wage - £14.40 (2 hours on social media – diary, posting etc.)
▪️National minimum wage - £7.20 (1 hour research on new products, styles of makeup, ordering stock)
▪️Consumables per week £5 (cotton buds, mascara wands, wipes, alcohol spray, kitchen roll)
▪️Product costs (5% of each product used in an average makeup) 15-20 products used per client. £7.50 per client on makeup = 7 clients = £52.50
▪️Eyelashes £4 per client = £28
▪️Brush use/wear and tear £3.50 per week
▪️Based on spending £1000 a year on training – weekly £19 (Note: Over the past two years I’ve spent £4,000 to train. £1000 a year is based on the lower end of the scale)

=£234.40 a week

Total profit per week = £10.60

So after all my costs/expenses and paying myself the MINIMUM wage, I come out with £10 profit a week - and to be honest, those who have seen the sheer size of my kit will know that I go above and beyond making sure I have the best of everything for you all. The above costs have also been kept to the lower end of the ‘average’ scale so in reality It could be lower than £10.60 profit a week. This projection also doesn’t include that Makeup artists work unsociable hours only having a couple of Saturdays off a year, along with most other beauty/hairdressing trades. Our evenings are also taken up practicing new looks, researching trends and running an appointment diary. Surely a skilled MUA deserves more than minimum wage!!!??? It breaks my heart seeing SO many girls charging £15-£25 a face. HOW can they possibly be earning a wage if their outgoing costs are anything close to the above? A high end kit is not cheap and to be able to offer a variety to your clients you need to spend a hell of a lot on products. A makeup is a luxury service, corners cannot be cut, and those who do will kill the industry for us all.

Girls, PLEASE do not undervalue yourself as an artist!!! We want to create wealth in this industry, not to kill it slowly by undercutting our competitors. Value yourself, your work, your time and your peers.

So next time you’re thinking about telling a makeup artist their prices are “too high” or “you wouldn’t dream of paying that much to get your makeup done”, PLEASE think about how much we put into our business vs how much profit we actually take home. We do it for our passion and love for the industry, not to “rip off” our clients!

Food for thought 💋
