My cystic acne has returned, and I wanted to share this in a more educational (but real) way.

Back in August I noticed a big shift in my skin. Around that time I’d used some products that were a little too stripping for me. Even though I went straight back to my usual, barrier-first routine, my skin had already been thrown off balance.

When the skin barrier is compromised, congestion can build under the surface. What I started seeing were lots of tiny whiteheads that slowly turned into deep, painful cystic spots, each one taking its turn to flare.

Things like colder weather teamed with hot dry air inside, hormones, and stress can all make this cycle harder to break, too. This is the important part: cystic acne sits deep in the skin. It’s not always something that topical skincare alone can fix, even when you’re doing everything “right”.

For me, the next step is a short-term, 3-month course of antibiotics to help calm inflammation, reduce bacteria, and break the cycle, alongside barrier repair and supportive skincare, eating a well supported diet (think anti-inflammatory).. and to never again use barrier stripping products 😭

I’m sharing this because acne doesn’t discriminate. Even skin professionals struggle, and it can really knock your confidence.
