This post has been prompted by two recent interactions:
The first was a conversation with a potential student who had already completed a laser tattoo removal course elsewhere.
In their words, the course had "taught them nothing."
I wish I could say this was the first time but we see this a lot.
It was an unlevelled CPD-accredited course, and when we looked into it further, the training provider wasn't listed on the official CPD register either.
The second was an advert we came across for an unlevelled laser tattoo removal course claiming to be suitable for complete beginners, with **no prerequisites** and a fast-track approach.
When someone questioned whether a course like this was really appropriate for a beginner, we replied and explained the difference between this type of training and a Level 5 standard, particularly when it comes to prerequisites and the depth of knowledge expected.
We were called incorrect and the comments were subsequently turned off.
And this is exactly why we think it's important to have this conversation. A beginner to the industry may not know these key considerations.
We're not saying that every CPD-accredited course is bad. **We offer CPD-accredited training ourselves.** alongside our VTCT offering.
We're saying that as a student, you need to understand what you're actually signing up for.
Laser tattoo removal isn't something that should be treated as a quick skill you can learn on a whim, particularly if you're starting from scratch.
You're working with a powerful medical-grade device on someone's skin, and your decisions can have real consequences.
There is currently no single UK-wide requirement setting one minimum qualification for everyone practising laser tattoo removal, which means the responsibility to choose good training still falls on the individual practitioner.
That's why we believe students deserve to know what sits behind the certificate they're paying for.
Don't just ask whether a course is accredited. Ask what standard you're being trained to.
