WHY FLAMINGOS LOSE THEIR PINK Flamingo parents produce a special red “crop milk” to feed their young. This milk is rich in carotenoids (the same pigments that make the parents pink). Because they give so many pigments to the chick, the parents temporarily lose some of their color and become paler. Also raising chicks takes a lot of energy. When flamingos are tired or stressed, their bodies use carotenoids for health instead of feather color, so their pink fades slightly. However once the chick grows and the parents return to their normal diet, the carotenoid levels rise again and the flamingos regain their bright pink color. Look it up if you don’t believe us! The baby sleep industry (yes it’s an industry) taught mothers to distrust themselves. Let’s undo some of that together, shall we? When you’re exhausted, it’s REALLY easy to believe the loudest voices. The “norm”. *Especially* when those voices offer an alluring “quick fix”. But these “solutions” aren’t grounded in neurobiology. They’re born from capitalism and convenience — and a deep cultural disconnection. Your baby isn’t malfunctioning. They’re not broken for waking at night or needing you for naps. And your instinct to be there for them isn’t broken either. It isn’t an overreaction. It isn’t “soft”. It’s strength. Your baby’s brain doesn’t know they were born to a modern world where we expect them to sleep alone for long stretches to suit our busy lifestyles. Their brain is wired to seek safety and connection, day and night. Some babies need EXTRA touch, closeness and soothing from their caregivers for longer, and we sometimes call these the “koala” babies, or barnacle babies or Velcro babies. These little ones seem to NEED our presence to drift to sleep or stay asleep, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Remember that independent sleep is a (relatively new) social construct, not the biological norm. If it’s feeling hard, I’ve been there! I know it can be so difficult to be so intensely needed during this time. We deserve much more support.
