WHY FLAMINGOS LOSE THEIR PINK Flamingo parents produce a special red “crop milk” to feed their young. This milk is rich in carotenoids (the same pigments that make the parents pink). Because they give so many pigments to the chick, the parents temporarily lose some of their color and become paler. Also raising chicks takes a lot of energy. When flamingos are tired or stressed, their bodies use carotenoids for health instead of feather color, so their pink fades slightly. However once the chick grows and the parents return to their normal diet, the carotenoid levels rise again and the flamingos regain their bright pink color. Look it up if you don’t believe us!
