Do Acrylics Damage Your Nails?
I hear this so often in salon.
We regularly get people coming in, asking for āsomething other than acrylics as theyāve ruined my nails previouslyāā¦
(great for me as I get to do my builder gel speech), or they will say they donāt want acrylics becauseā¦
āthey ruin your nailsā.
They know this for a fact; because their neighbourās cousinās husbandās wifeās dog, had a set once - and they told them so šš½
Although I am an avid new recruit to builder gel and I will praise it until the cows come home - I have to do my bit and put people straight about acrylic, as it was and always will be - my first love (although I have now moved on šš)
No, acrylic does not damage your nails. Period.
Acrylic as a product is brilliant and when applied correctly and removed correctly, is an amazing bit of kit.
I am 20 years plus trained with acrylics and I donāt believe it would still be around or as popular if it wasnāt a decent product.
Hereās the controversial bit.
Damage is caused by either the technician applying the product (over exposure of product/incorrect ratios/over filing) or from incorrect removal techniques. This can be from drilling off and over filing by your tech - or the client removing their nails themselves.
By that I mean the client (yes you) can cause the most damage to your own nails if you donāt go to a decent salon and get them removed properly.
When a nail is overfiled, you lose layers of your natural nail, which in turn makes them thinner, sometimes sore and more prone to ripping or tearing. This damage can take a long time to grow out.
Similarly if you bite or pull acrylic off your natural nails you are doing exactly the same thing. That is where damage occurs. It is not the product itself.
I am sick and tired of hearing acrylic being blamed for damaged nails.
Go to a decent salon, check their credentials/certificates. Look at the brand they are using - it will be labelled on the bottles. If there is no label, there is a reason they donāt want you to know. Ask them the name of the brand. Google it.
Donāt let people over file you. If thereās heat, tell them. Make them stop.
Donāt bite or pull your acrylics off to save paying for a proper removal. Youāll pay more for it in the long run.
If you have damaged nails and want acrylics it can be done sensibly by a good technician.
Keep the length short so as not to put too much stress on them and allow them to recover.
All in all, be responsible for where you go to get your nails done. Donāt go cheap or quick because of time or finances. Itāll bite you in the backside later.
Good nails are an investment. They are not something to be done cheaply or be done with mediocre products or irresponsible technicians.
Take the time, itās worth it I promise.
And noā¦. acrylics donāt damage your nails.
Much loveš
