North Tyneside Council has confirmed it is not considering using the former Monkseaton High School site for housing.

The school closed on 31 August, with the modern £20m facility now back under council management.

Asked about the site's future, Mayor Karen Clark said: "To be absolutely clear, we are not considering using the site for housing."

"There are no final proposals for the future use of the former Monkseaton High School site. The Council is carrying out a thorough options appraisal to make sure we secure the best long term outcome for local residents and the wider community.

The Mayor also highlighted the importance of the site's playing fields to local sports teams and community groups.

"We also recognise how important the playing fields are to the sports teams and community groups that use them. Protecting their continued use of the fields will be an important part of our plans for the site."

The council is carrying out an options appraisal and due diligence process to consider the future of the building and land, with a working group looking at all options - just not housing.
