πŸ”Ή 5 Things I Want You To Know About Back Pain πŸ”Ή

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physiotherapy, but there are still lots of misconceptions about how it should be managed.

Here are 5 important things I tell my patients:

βœ… 1. Red Flag Screening Is Important
Whilst most back pain is not serious, certain symptoms need urgent medical attention. These include changes in bladder or bowel function, numbness around the saddle area, significant weakness in the legs, unexplained weight loss, fever, or pain that is constant and unrelenting.

βœ… 2. Pain Relief Can Help
Using appropriate pain relief can make it easier to stay active and perform daily activities. Pain medication doesn't fix the cause of back pain, but it can help manage symptoms whilst your body recovers. Always follow medical advice and guidance from your pharmacist or GP.

βœ… 3. Movement Is Usually Better Than Rest
Years ago, people were advised to stay in bed when they hurt their back. We now know that prolonged rest can actually slow recovery. Gentle movement and keeping as active as possible within your comfort levels is often one of the best things you can do.

βœ… 4. Heat and Cold Therapy Can Be Useful
Heat can help relax tight muscles and reduce stiffness, whilst cold therapy may help calm pain and inflammation, particularly after a flare-up. Different people respond differently, so it's worth finding what works best for you.

βœ… 5. A Physiotherapy Assessment Can Identify The Cause
Back pain is rarely a one-size-fits-all problem. Factors such as joint stiffness, muscle weakness, posture, movement patterns, previous injuries and lifestyle can all contribute. A physiotherapy assessment helps identify the likely causes and provides a personalised treatment and rehabilitation plan.

If you're struggling with back pain, don't ignore it or simply hope it will go away.

If you are experiencing any red flags please seek urgent medical attention.

Understanding what's driving your symptoms is the first step towards recovery.
