Medik8, founded by Elliot Isaacs, is stocked in about 5,000 beauty salons globally
A cosmetics brand started by a biochemistry graduate in the back of his father’s pharmacy has struck a deal that values the business at up to £200 million as demand for science-based beauty businesses grows.
Elliot Isaacs, who founded Medik8 in 2009, has sold a majority stake in the business to Inflexion, a mid-market private equity firm that also owns stakes in Mountain Warehouse, the retail chain, and Virgin Experiences. Market sources said that the deal valued Medik8 at between £150 million and £200 million.

The deal comes after Estée Lauder’s $1 billion takeover of Deciem, owner of The Ordinary beauty brand, last week and reflects a changing industry in which young brands are stealing market share from the likes of L’Oréal and Coty.
Isaacs, 49, started the business after seeing a surge in the number of middle-aged women visiting his father’s pharmacy in North Finchley, north London, to ask for tubes of retinol to combat their wrinkles, rather than creams marketed by beauty brands. He searched scientific papers for evidence of what reduced wrinkles and developed the idea of combining vitamin C, sunscreen and vitamin A in skincare regimes — what Isaacs calls the brand’s “CSA philosophy”.

He said that he had been approached by large consumer goods businesses and other private equity firms, but wanted to stay involved in the business as he planned to grow it threefold.
Medik8 is stocked in about 5,000 beauty salons globally, in Space NK shops and online through its own website and that of Cult Beauty.

The brand’s pre-tax profits more than doubled last year from £2.9 million in 2019 to £7 million, while turnover increased by a third to £18.9 million. Isaacs said that the recent rapid growth of the company had prompted it to seek an outside investor as it currently did not have the capacity to meet demand.
