Six years of black box dye β copper. In two appointments. π§‘
Black box dye is one of the hardest things to come back from. Every layer builds up, and the colour sits deeper in the hair each time. You can't wash it out, and you can't just put a lighter colour on top.
So Katy didn't fight it. When you lift dark pigment out of hair, it goes through red and orange on the way. Instead of pushing past that warmth and stressing the hair, Katy worked with it and steered it into a rich copper. It took two stages, with a proper cut to take off what had to go, and there's barely a trace of black left.
The part we love most is Amy's own words:
"β¦it still feels healthy!"
That's the goal every time. Big change, done properly.
π This took two appointments. Imagine what you could do with six.
Our Year of Colour competition is still open: six colour appointments with Katy over 12 months. Vivid, natural, or like Amy, finally getting out from under years of box dye.

We did NOT expect this ππ
We asked what you'd do with your hair if nobody was judging⦠and you lot did not hold back.
We've had:
π©Ά Silver grey with teal hidden underneath
π Full rainbow comebacks from folk who've "been every colour going"
π¦ Black and pink raccoon stripes
ππ A mum wanting purple and blue to match her daughter

π€ And people who just want a change after years of leaving their hair alone
Honestly, reading them has made our week. Every single answer shows why we do what we do. Your hair, your way, no judgement. Ever. π
Still time to get in! Six appointments of whatever colour you like with Katy, vivid or natural, bold or subtle.

Diane's first visit with Katy β¨
We're known for the loud stuff, but a natural uses exactly the same colour theory. You just don't get to hide anything behind neon.
Before: Diane came in with brunette hair, warm faded lengths and one-length ends that had lost their shape. Nothing was wrong with it, but it all sat at one depth, so nothing moved.
The science bit: When you lighten brown hair, it doesn't go straight to blonde. It passes through red, then orange, then gold. Most "brassy" highlights come from stopping at the wrong stage and hoping. Katy took the pieces around the top and face frame up to a warm honey-gold on purpose, and kept the depth through the underneath and ends. The contrast between the two is what makes it look dimensional instead of stripy.
The cut: She took the length up to just past the shoulders with a soft, solid edge, so the ends look full again. Then she finished with loose waves to show off the placement.
After: Sunlit on top, rich underneath, and it'll grow out soft. π―
Vivid or natural, the chair's the same, and so is the challenge. What's yours? π

Aine's back in the chair π
Aine's been with Katy for years, and this is a good example of what looking after a vivid long-term actually involves.
Before: Red fades warm. The pigment that sits in the hair washes out a bit with every shampoo, and what it leaves behind leans coral and orange. Add some summer, some heat styling, and a few weeks since her last visit, and the ends were dry, frayed and a good bit brighter than the mids.
The fix: Just putting the same red back on would have kept pushing it warmer. Katy went cooler with a raspberry tone that sits over the faded coral and pulls it back to a deep, even pink-red from root to tip. She kept the dark root shadow so the grow-out stays soft. Then she took the tired ends off, reshaped the curtain fringe, and finished with loose waves so you can see the colour move.
After: Richer and cooler, with the shine back. It's the same Aine, turned right back up π₯
Vivid colour isn't a one-off. It's a relationship, and this is what the relationship looks like.
Got a red that's gone orange on you? Bring it in and challenge us π

No gangs. No guest list. No "not for you."
At Funky-Doos, everyone gets through the door, and this competition's the same. Lads, lassies, grannies, first-timers, the one who's always wanted blue but never had the nerve, and the one who just wants their greys blended and to walk out feeling like themselves again. Everybody's in.
The prize: a full year of colour with Katy. That's 6 colour appointments over 12 months, completely free.
Vivids, naturals, balayage, highlights, grey blending, a subtle refresh or a total change. Your colour, whatever that looks like.

You cannot fix a purple by putting another purple on top of it.
Laura's wedding hair was built over a few visits, not one. Last time she was in, Katy put in a blue-based purple. Laura loved it β genuinely loved it. It just didn't sit right next to the dress. And the dress was a pink-based purple.
Two purples. Completely different jobs.
Here's the bit people get wrong. The instinct is to go over the top with the warmer one and let it win. It doesn't win. Layer a pink-based violet onto a blue-based violet and what comes back is the blue-based violet, only muddier. The cool pigment is already sitting in the hair. Adding warmth on top doesn't remove it β it just puts something else in front of it.
So the blue had to come out before the pink could go in.
And you don't lift it out. Not on a bride. Vivid violets are direct dyes and they don't lift clean β they grab, they go patchy, and you spend hair condition you can't get back when there's a date already in the diary.
You wash it out. Hot, deliberately, over weeks. The heat opens the cuticle and lets the direct dye release, and you keep going until enough of the blue has gone that the hair will take a warm violet honestly instead of arguing with it.
Then depth back through the length. Then the pink-based purple, placed underneath and through the front.
Then the wedding.
The colour you can see took an afternoon. The colour you can't see took a month.
If you've got a vivid that won't shift, or one that won't sit right on top of what's already in there β that's the conversation. Bring it.

She booked in for a colour. What she needed was a cut.
The brief came in as orange or blue β couldn't decide between them β and it had to last.
Then the inspo pics arrived. Four of them. Four different colours.
One haircut.
That's the whole diagnosis sitting right there. When the colour changes in every photo and the shape doesn't, the colour isn't the thing being fallen in love with. The shape is. The vivid is just what happened to be sitting on it.
**ghaircut **g
So that's where Katy started. The grow-out was chunky β hard blonde against a dark base, no blend, and the length sitting in one heavy block with nothing to move it. Any vivid dropped onto that would have landed in stripes and gone muddy at the join inside a fortnight.
So she highlighted it properly instead. Lightened through and blended, so the contrast reads lived-in rather than stripey. Then the shape: s**g through the top and sides, curtain fringe, layers disconnected enough to actually move, tail left soft at the back.
No orange. No blue.
A haircut and a set of highlights β and she walked out with the thing she was actually asking for in all four of those photos.
The consultation is the skill. The colour's the easy bit.

Part three of Katy's masterclass β and this one contradicts everything we've told you so far. π΄
This is Chelsea. First ever visit to Funky-Doos, first time in Katy's chair, and she walked straight in for the lot: dark root, red through the mids, dark flicky tips.
Right, colour theory π
Robyn's green needed a clean, cool yellow and hated warmth. Karen's berry lived on it. Chelsea's red? Red is warmth's best pal. It's the one bold colour that doesn't need you lifted anywhere near blonde β you take the base up to a warm orange-gold and you stop there. Less time in the chair, far less stress on the hair, and a red that actually reads as red instead of drifting pink.
Two things Katy did on purpose that most folk miss:
1. The dark root is deliberate. That's not a shortcut, it's engineering. There's no hard line where colour meets regrowth β so Chelsea can go months without a root panic and it'll just look like it was always meant to be that way.
2. The dark tips are the clever bit. Bracket a bright colour with depth top and bottom and the red looks brighter. Your eye judges a colour by what's sitting next to it, and against dark, red turns the volume up. Then on a flicky cut, every single flick throws out a flash of dark against the red. The cut and the colour are doing the same job.
One honest bit: red fades faster than any other colour going. Cold rinses, a colour-safe shampoo and a colour-depositing conditioner will keep it screaming for weeks longer β Katy will tell you exactly what to use before you leave.
Welcome to Funky-Doos, Chelsea. Cracking first visit. π΄
