π£ PODIATRIST, CHIROPODIST OR FOOT HEALTH PRACTITIONER β WHATβS THE DIFFERENCE? π£
Itβs a question Iβm often asked, so hereβs a simple explanationβ¦
π©Ί Podiatrist / Chiropodist
A podiatrist (formerly known as a chiropodist) is a regulated healthcare professional who has completed a university degree in podiatry and is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
They can assess and manage a wide range of foot and lower-limb conditions, including more complex medical problems, and can work alongside other healthcare professionals where necessary.

Its a phrase many of us in foot health hear from time to time:
βSoβ¦ you only cut nails then?β
And whilst nail care can absolutely be part of what we do, the reality is that Foot Health Practitioners offer far more than many people realise.
For many patients, understanding what a Foot Health Practitioner actually does can be the difference between struggling unnecessarily with painful feet⦠and finally getting the right help.
Your feet are your foundation. They carry you every day, and when something is uncomfortable, painful or simply not right, it can affect mobility, confidence and quality of life far beyond your feet alone.
So letβs clear this up.
A Foot Health Practitioner does not βjust cut nails.β
We help people maintain, improve and manage foot health in practical, preventative and supportive ways.
What Can a Foot Health Practitioner Help With?
Routine Foot Care:
Yes, this can include nail cutting and management β particularly if nails are thickened, difficult to reach, uncomfortable, or youβre no longer able to manage them yourself safely.
Corn and Callus Reduction:
Hard skin, corns and callus can become painful and impact how you walk. Careful reduction can improve comfort significantly.
Thickened or Difficult Nails:
This may include fungal-looking nails, damaged nails, involuted nails, or nails that have become hard to manage.
Ingrown Toenail Support:
Many Foot Health Practitioners can help manage and relieve painful ingrown toenails conservatively where appropriate.
Diabetic Foot Awareness:
Whilst medical management remains essential, regular foot health support and monitoring can play an important role in prevention and maintenance.
Skin and Heel Care:
Dry, cracked heels, fissures and general skin health all matter more than people often realise.
Foot Health Assessments:
We assess changes, concerns and risks, helping patients understand when something is straightforward, when it needs monitoring, and when referral onward may be appropriate.
Footwear and Practical Advice:
Sometimes pain isnβt just the foot β itβs pressure, friction, poor fit, or lifestyle factors.
Preventative Care
One of the biggest parts of foot health is helping prevent small issues becoming larger, more painful problems.
Who Might Benefit?
Foot Health Practitioners commonly support,
Older adults, People with reduced mobility, Busy professionals, Diabetic patients needing regular maintenance, People struggling with painful corns, callus or thick nails, Those who simply want to stay comfortable and mobile.
Itβs Not Just About Treatment β Itβs About Independence.
For many patients, good foot health is about far more than appearance.
It can mean:
Walking comfortably, Staying independent, Preventing avoidable pain, Remaining active, Reducing risk of complications.
When your feet hurt, everything can feel harder.
Knowing when to seek professional foot care can save discomfort, time and often bigger issues later.
When Should You See a Foot Health Practitioner?
You do not need to βwait until it gets really bad.β
If you are experiencing, Painful nails, Hard skin or corns, Cracked heels, Thickened nails, Difficulty reaching your feet, Changes you are concerned about
β¦it may be time to seek support.
The Bottom Line:
Foot Health Practitioners are trained professionals focused on maintaining foot health, comfort and function.
So no β we do not βjust cut nails.β
We help people stay mobile, comfortable, independent and informed.
Because healthy feet are not a luxury.
They are an essential part of everyday wellbeing.
If your feet are affecting your comfort, mobility or confidence, seeking professional advice may be one of the simplest ways to support your overall wellbeing.

Dry skin on a diabetic foot is not a moisturiser problem. It is autonomic neuropathy, and it opens the door to infection.
Sympathetic denervation shuts down the sweat glands in the foot. Without normal hydration, the skin loses elasticity, thickens into callus, and fissures, most often around the heel and the margins of pressure areas. Each fissure is a breach in the barrier that keeps bacteria out.
Now layer in the rest of the picture. Sensory loss means the patient does not feel the crack forming. Callus over a bony prominence raises local pressure and can seed a pre-ulcer beneath it. A deep heel fissure in a neuropathic, possibly ischaemic foot is a plausible entry point for a limb-threatening infection.
So treat the skin as part of ulcer prevention, not aftercare. Debride callus, keep the skin supple with emollient, and inspect fissures as you would any wound at risk of breaking down.
The cheapest ulcer to manage is the one that never forms.
How proactively is skin integrity managed in your pathway?

Checking your skin regularly could save your life π
The importance of checking for melanoma β including your feet
Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that can develop from an existing mole or appear as a new mark on the skin. When caught early, treatment is often very successful β which is why regular skin checks are so important.
Many people forget to check their feet, but melanoma can develop:
* On the soles of the feet
* Between the toes
* Around the heels
* Under or around the toenails
* On the tops of the feet and ankles
Because we donβt always look at the bottoms of our feet, changes can easily go unnoticed.
βΈ»
What to look for β The ABCDE rule:
* A β Asymmetry: One half doesnβt match the other
* B β Border: Edges are irregular, blurred or jagged
* C β Colour: Uneven colour (brown, black, red, white or blue)
* D β Diameter: Larger than 6mm
* E β Evolving: Changing in size, shape, colour, itching or bleeding
Also watch for:
* A dark streak under a toenail not caused by injury
* A sore on the foot that doesnβt heal
* New pigmentation on the sole
* A mole that looks different from the others
βΈ»
As part of good foot health π£
When caring for your feet, take a moment to check the skin on your soles, heels and between your toes. If you struggle to see the bottoms of your feet, use a mirror or ask someone you trust to help.
If you notice any unusual or changing lesions, always contact your GP promptly. Itβs better to get it checked and have reassurance.
Early detection saves lives β and that includes your feet π
