I had a new client come in for a fill appointment. When she arrived, she mentioned that one of her nails was almost completely broken.
After inspecting the set, I realised there wasn’t any builder gel or structure underneath at all… it was only gel polish. 😳
This is a huge no-no, especially for long nails. Gel polish is a very soft product and simply isn’t strong enough to reinforce the structure and construction of longer nails.
Applying it in thick layers is not the solution either, because it can lead to heat spikes, chemical reactions, and even burns to the nail bed.
So what did I do?
✨ Removed the product completely
✨ Shortened the nails
✨ Changed the shape to a more natural-looking oval
✨ Reinforced the nails properly with gel
And because it was such a beautiful sunny day, we chose some gorgeous summery colours to finish the set ☀️💅

I wouldn’t undercharge and I don’t say that lightly.
When you’re starting out, it’s completely normal to feel like you’re “not good enough yet” or that you need to charge less because your timings are slow or you’re still learning.
But here’s the truth most beginners don’t realise:
Your price isn’t just about your speed - it’s about your positioning.
If you start low, you don’t just attract more clients…
you attract the wrong expectations.
Clients who only book because you’re cheap rarely stay loyal when you grow. And worse, it keeps you stuck in a cycle where you’re overworked, underpaid, and constantly doubting your worth.
Talking about timing - every nail tech starts slow. That’s normal. That’s learning.
You don’t fix that by charging less…you fix it by practice and by getting better.
Your skill will improve with repetition, but your pricing should still reflect the service you are building, not just the speed you’re currently at.
Even as a beginner, you are investing time, using products, providing a service, building a business.
Instead of thinking “I’m slow so I should charge less” - start thinking:
“I’m in my learning stage, so I’ll price fairly, grow into it, and attract clients who respect my journey.”
Because when you know your value early, you don’t have to rebuild it later 🤍

If your pedicure doesn’t look polished or “expensive,” it’s usually because of messy cuticle work (or ignoring cuticles altogether).
Even with a perfect polish color, chipped edges or uneven shaping, dry, overgrown, or ragged cuticles immediately make feet look less maintained. High-end salons spend a lot of time here for a reason—it frames the nail.
Here’s what typically brings the whole look down:
* Not pushing back cuticles (so polish floods onto skin)
* Cutting cuticles too aggressively (leads to rough regrowth)
* Dry, cracked skin around the nail
* Polish applied too close or too far from the cuticle line

Nail techs (especially early in their careers) tend to run into the same issues. Some are minor, but others can affect client safety, retention, and your reputation. Here are the most common mistakes:
1. Poor sanitation and hygiene
This is the biggest one. Not properly disinfecting tools, reusing files/buffers, or skipping hand sanitization can spread infections like fungal nail infections or bacterial issues. It’s not just bad practice - it can get you in serious trouble legally.
2. Over-filing the natural nail.
A lot of beginners file too aggressively, thinning the nail plate. This leads to sensitivity, pain, and long-term damage. You should refine, not strip the nail.
3. Improper prep
Skipping or rushing prep (cuticle work, dehydration, removing shine) leads to lifting and damage if the nail plate. Most retention problems come from bad prep, not bad products.
4. Flooding the cuticle
Letting gel touch the skin causes lifting and can trigger allergies over time.
5. Incorrect curing
Not curing gel for the right time (or using the wrong lamp) means the product isn’t fully hardened. This can cause allergic reactions, weak nails and less lasting service.
6. Using too much product
Bulky nails look unnatural and are more likely to lift or break. Structure matters, but balance is key.
7. Ignoring nail structure
A missing or misplaced apex means the nail won’t have proper strength. This leads to snapping, especially on longer sets.
8. Poor communication with clients
Not asking about lifestyle, allergies, or preferences can lead to dissatisfaction, or even harm.
9. Rushing services
Speed comes with experience. Rushing leads to sloppy application, poor prep, and mistakes that affect retention and safety.
10. Not continuing education
Trends, products, and safety standards evolve. Nail techs who stop learning fall behind quickly.
