In reflexology, different areas of the feet are traditionally believed to correspond to different parts and organs of the body.

But here’s the interesting part…

There is currently no good scientific evidence that pressing a particular point on your foot directly stimulates or “treats” the corresponding organ.

Researchers have actually investigated this — including whether working on a specific reflex point changes blood flow to the supposedly corresponding organ — and the evidence has not established this specific connection.

So does that mean reflexology is pointless?

Not at all.

Reflexology is a form of complementary therapy, and research continues to investigate its effects on things such as relaxation, wellbeing, sleep and symptoms such as pain and anxiety. The evidence varies depending on what outcome is being studied, so it’s important not to present reflexology as a treatment for medical conditions.
