From 3 GCSEs to an Independent Hospital… 🤍

I left school in 1995 with just three GCSEs and started my career in beauty.
I wasn’t particularly academic at school. But I always knew that, with the right guidance and an opportunity, I could turn my hand to almost anything.

I went on to complete my NVQ in Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy. At the time, there were people who thought I had taken the “easy option” by going into beauty because I wasn’t clever enough to do anything else.

But that “easy option” became my career.

In 2008, I became self-employed and began building my own business. That same year, I also became a lecturer, teaching others my profession.

And I certainly didn’t get everything right along the way.

Throughout my journey, I’ve made mistakes, learned some lessons the hard way, picked myself back up and taught myself things I never thought I would need to know. Running a business has taught me just as much about myself as any qualification ever has.

There have been successes, setbacks, risks, changes of direction and plenty of moments where I’ve had to work things out as I went along.

But I kept going.

I grew my business, employed staff, continued teaching and continued investing in my own education.

My career evolved from beauty into advanced aesthetics, and in 2022, I graduated with a Level 7 qualification in Aesthetic Practice.

And now we come to 2026.

A milestone that feels quite surreal when I think about where I started.

My clinic is now registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales as an INDEPENDENT HOSPITAL.

An independent hospital.

From leaving school with three GCSEs and being made to feel that beauty was the “easy option”…

to owning and running a clinic that has reached the standards required to be registered as an independent hospital in Wales.

That means more to me than I can probably put into words.

Not simply because of the title, but because of everything it represents, 31 years of learning, working, making mistakes, learning from them, taking risks, building a business, continuing my education and refusing to let my school results determine what I was capable of achieving.

So this post is for the younger generation, and for anyone who has ever been made to feel that they aren’t “academic enough” to succeed.

Your results at school do not determine your intelligence, your ability or what you can achieve with your life.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from the beginning.

You will make mistakes.
You will learn lessons.
You may change direction.
You may have to teach yourself along the way.

That’s part of the journey.
