It appears likely that a misunderstanding of the role of medication given for pain is contributing to problems with back and musculoskeletal pain.
New campaigns are pointing out that remaining active is what helps these conditions for most people.
Pain killers don’t exist - at best medication masks pain. Often they are not useful for back pain after a while.
There is a risk of becoming reliant on medication and this is leading to a significant crisis for many people.
Painkillers 'mask, not kill' long-term pain An NHS campaign aims to get patients to look for alternatives to long-term painkiller use.

We often confuse the effects of inactivity with the ageing process itself, and believe certain diseases are purely the result of getting older.
Actually, our modern sedentary lifestyles have simply speeded up our underlying age-related decline.
Many muscle and joint aches and pains (including those attributed to joint degeneration) become steadily worse if we move less. This is prevalent in all ages from back and neck pain in office workers to hip, knee and ankle pain in our 40s, 50s and older.
If you want to reduce the likelihood of future pain or control your current ones aiming at half an hours moderate level activity (ie a brisk walk) 5 times a week is a great start.
Can exercise reverse the ageing process? It's not for everyone, but older athletes are pushing the limits of what the body can do as it ages.

There is an epidemic of back pain. It is so severe that back problems are are the single largest cause of disability in The UK (and worldwide). Yet this pain is rarely caused by anything medically serious and the most effective solutions are almost always ones you can do for your self with a little guidance.
Drugs mask symptoms and other than helping you remain mobile have no effect on the condition.
Scans are only useful in the very rare cases where orthooaedic interventions are considered.
Remaining positive, being active and having a reasonable explanation for the symptoms and possibly some manual therapy / excercise is what works for most people.
What can doctors do for your back pain? Not as much as you can | Ranjana Srivastava Opioids don’t work. Surgery and injections rarely do, and scans are unnecessary. Better to get moving
