“I’ll start exercising when I’ve got my pain under control.”

I hear this more often than you might think.

And I understand why. You’ve hit menopause and suddenly it feels like your joints hurt. When something hurts, the natural response is often to protect it, rest it and avoid making things worse.

But here’s what I want more women to understand.

Exercise isn’t just something you do AFTER recovering from pain. It is part of the recovery process.

That doesn’t mean pushing through pain or ignoring symptoms or throwing yourself into a workout.

It means finding movements you can tolerate, building confidence and gradually improving what your body can do.

You don’t have to wait until everything feels perfect to begin.

If pain has been stopping you from getting stronger, let’s have a conversation about where you could start. Comment START and let’s find your starting point.

You want to spend an afternoon in the garden. Go on the longer walk. Get on with something you enjoy.

But first: “What will my knee think of this? And will my back be sending a strongly worded letter tomorrow?”

So you do a little less. Leave the heavier jobs. Start wondering whether this is just how things are now.

That uncertainty takes up a lot of energy and headspace.

Sue knows that feeling. Gardening and walking had become difficult and painful. She came looking for help with what hurt.

We found somewhere to start, practised, adjusted and gradually built the challenge.
Her deadlift has gone from 8 kg to 50 kg. She can get stuck into hard gardening without paying for it the next day. She’s walked Cheddar Gorge without worrying her knees might collapse.

Apparently the heavy weights hadn’t checked her date of birth.
In Sue’s words: “I am now stronger than I’ve ever been, both physically and mentally.”
Her shoulder still occasionally flares. We adapt the training—and she says she no longer worries when it happens.

Your starting point will be your own. We’ll work out what you can manage, support you through the practice and develop the plan as you become more capable.

Women over 40: what would you like to get back to without all the negotiations?

Tell me you’re over 40 without telling me you’re over 40!

Getting out of a chair has become a committee meeting. Your knees have concerns. Your back would like a word.
You were only trying to bend over to pick something up.

If aches and pains are starting to make your decisions for you, we’ve got work to do.

We’ll find your starting point and build from there. Strength, fitness and a bit more confidence in what your body can do. With adjustments when you need them and a bigger challenge when you’re ready.
I’m 60. I have plans too. None of them involve asking permission from a chair.

Over 40 and ready to get on with things? DM me “PLANS” and tell me what aches and pains are getting in the way of. Let’s talk about coaching.

Over 50? 0ver 60? Strength gives you choices. And it gives you the attitude that you can do it. You don’t need to reliant on someone else to do hard things for you.
Strength gives you choice.
To lift what you want to lift.
Move what you want to move.
Go where you want to go.
And keep doing life on your terms.
That’s the kind of strength I’m interested in as I get older.
Follow if you want that too. 💪
