What’s on the opposite side of the valley from Tre Cime De Lavaredo in the Dolomites?

Look across the valley to the Cadini di Misurina. An awe-inspiring series of jagged crests, sharp spires and towers that rise from the meadows and forests surrounding Lake Misurina.

Unlike Tre Cime, the Cadini is rarely busy. We hiked on a cloudy day and didn’t see another soul.

Our route was described as starting with “a straight-forward 550 metre uphill section”. Really?! Two hours later we were still picking our way up a steep, narrow, zig-zagging, often slippery path that became no more than a goat track above the tree line. But the views are as breathtaking as from Tre Cime!

Discovered during a 2 day wait for weather to improve. Sometimes the wait becomes the main thing ☺️

Got very excited on arriving in the Sexten Dolomites to go up this …. The UNESCO listed Tre Cime Di Lavaredo. But the weather was against us 😔😞

Rain drummed on our roof, thunder rumbled around the valley, snow fell, then the clouds shrouded the mountains in an invisibility cloak with occasional flashes of brilliant blue sky!

For two days we waited, parked-up at Area Sosta Camper Missurina at the foot of the Strada Panoramica delle Tre Cime, the only road up to the trailhead.

Beautiful Lake Carezza. So still, calm and tranquil, is fed by water bubbling up through the limestone base so very little disturbs it.

Drive north east from the Italian Lakes towards Bolzano and the Dolomite mountains and you will find it. After a long tunnel that climbs out of Bolzano through the Ega Valley gorge, you suddenly find yourself in the Dolomites proper. The road winds steeply upwards through pine forests, with wonderful views of the Catinaccio Massif and Lake Carezza.

We walked all around the little lake with its stunningly beautiful backdrop of the Latemar Massif. The mirror-glass green water reflects the surrounding trees.

Top tip - to enjoy the natural picture perfect beauty in peace and quiet get there before 10.00. By 10.15 coaches and buses start arriving. It’s worth it!
