Let’s look at some of the skincare trends on social media platforms. Today, I’d like to explore “Slugging” - the trend of putting thick layer of petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) on the skin as part of night time skin care routines.

💧 VASELINE DOESN’T ACTUALLY MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN…

Vaseline is an occlusive, which means it creates a layer over the skin, which may help to prevent TEWL (transepidermal water loss) — basically, it stops water escaping from your skin.

But here’s the important bit…

Vaseline doesn’t add water to your skin. It’s much better at keeping moisture in than putting moisture in. Think of it like putting a lid on a cup: If there’s already water in the cup, the lid helps stop it evaporating. But putting a lid on an empty cup isn’t going to fill it.

Petroleum jelly may be useful for very dry, flaky or compromised skin, such as chapped lips or dry elbows or knees, and it can help with healing of minor cuts and scrapes by preventing them drying out.

It certainly isn’t suitable for everyone — especially if someone is prone to acne or folliculitis. While petroleum jelly itself is considered non-comedogenic, it can trap sweat and oil which can contribute to irritation or clogged feeling skin. Layering it over active ingredients can cause irritation. Not to mention it’s greasy texture which will transfer onto pillowcases, clothes, etc.

And the name “Slugging”? It comes from the fact that you’re left with a shiny, slippery layer on your face that makes you look like you’ve been slimed by a slug. 🐌 Nice!

We believe that you’re far better off using a decent moisturiser with ingredients that feed the skin, ingredients that the skin will recognise: Vitamin A. Retinoids (vitamin A) help to regulate oil production and increase cell turnover, basically to “normalise” skin.

Remember, anything can turn into a trend. A bit like the Emperor’s New Clothes, if you can get enough followers to go along with it, it becomes a trend. Following blindly can lead to problems. Listen to your trained skin professionals and you won’t go far wrong.
