ℹ️Tennis Elbow: Why Where The Pain Is Does Not Always Tell The Full Story.

If you have been dealing with pain on the outside of your elbow, you are far from alone. Tennis Elbow is one of the most common elbow problems out there, affecting roughly 1 in 50 adults every year.
The condition builds slowly over time through everyday tasks like gripping, lifting, and repeated arm movements rather than one sudden injury. It is not straightforward inflammation but a gradual breakdown of tendon tissue that has been overworked for too long.

A proper assessment can identify exactly what is going on and map out the most effective route to recovery.

ℹ️There Is More Than One Type

Tennis Elbow is not a single condition. It can show up in five different ways depending on exactly where in the outer elbow and forearm the problem has developed. This is why two people with the same elbow pain can need completely different treatment. Finding out which type you have is where effective treatment begins.

ℹ️Your Elbow Might Not Be The Real Problem

The pain in your elbow may not actually be coming from your elbow at all. The way you hold your shoulders, the position of your neck, and how you sit at a desk all create a build-up of tension that slowly works its way down the arm. Research consistently shows that weakness and poor posture in the upper back and shoulders are often the real starting point, long before the elbow ever begins to hurt.

ℹ️Everyday Habits Can Be The Hidden Cause

Your body works as one connected system, and sometimes the elbow takes the strain from a problem that started much further up. A poorly set up desk, hours in an awkward position, repeated gripping at work, or long days typing can all accumulate pressure on the same tissues over time. Research shows that people who do repetitive, forceful tasks in poor posture are over four times more likely to develop this kind of problem.

ℹ️An Integrated Approach That Gets Results

Rather than relying on a single technique, the approach used here brings together a combination of methods that research supports as most effective for lasting recovery. This includes hands-on soft tissue work and joint mobilisation to restore movement and ease pain, targeted loading exercises to rebuild tendon strength gradually and safely, and postural and movement retraining to address the patterns driving the problem.
Ergonomic guidance helps reduce daily strain at work or at home, whilst shockwave therapy is used where appropriate to stimulate the body's own healing response in more persistent cases, with strong evidence supporting its use in tendon recovery.
Acupuncture is also offered as part of the treatment plan, with a growing body of research supporting its use for pain relief when combined with other active treatment. Where electrotherapy is indicated, therapeutic ultrasound has shown the most consistent results and is used selectively based on individual need. Every treatment plan is built around what your body actually needs, drawing on the best available evidence.

ℹ️Why A Whole Body Assessment Matters

If you have had treatment before and the pain keeps returning, there is usually a reason and, more importantly, there is usually a solution. Addressing only the elbow without considering the wider contributing factors rarely leads to lasting results.

A thorough hands-on assessment considers everything driving your pain, not just where it hurts, and that is what makes treatment more precise and far more likely to hold.
If your elbow pain has been going on longer than it should, get in touch today.

⚡Shockwave Therapy at Strength and Therapy Rochdale

ℹ️Shockwave therapy uses high-energy sound waves delivered through the skin directly into the affected area.
These waves work by encouraging the body to heal itself — they stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, kick-start collagen production, calm overactive pain signals, break down stubborn calcium deposits, and promote tissue repair within tendons, muscles, and fascia — all without the need for injections, medication, or surgery.

ℹ️It works best for long-standing chronic conditions where the body's healing process has effectively given up and other treatments have provided little or no lasting relief.

ℹ️Results are significantly better when shockwave therapy is used as part of a combined treatment approach, alongside hands-on manual therapy and a structured, progressive rehabilitation exercise programme tailored to you. The evidence is clear — used on its own, it is considerably less effective.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review

It was a pleasure to receive this recent patient review. 😊

After only a couple of sessions, a patient who had experienced long-standing upper back tension, jaw pain and headaches is already reporting significant improvement.

Through a comprehensive subjective history and detailed objective assessment, the underlying contributors to their symptoms were identified, allowing for a fully individualised treatment plan rather than a standardised approach.

🎯Treatment has focused on restoring optimal function through manual hands-on therapy, targeted soft-tissue work, and joint mobilisation, always adapted to the patient's presentation on the day.

Equally important has been providing clear explanations, so the patient understands the links between posture, movement patterns, stress and their symptoms.

👨‍🎓Ongoing patient education, structured aftercare and a progressive rehabilitation programme form a central part of this process, supporting continued improvement and helping to prevent symptoms from returning.

🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️If you are living with persistent tension, headaches or pain and are seeking a practitioner who listens carefully, assesses comprehensively and supports you beyond the treatment room, you are welcome to get in touch on 07719 227 728.
