On the 1st June 2025, changes were made in relation to prescribing for cosmetic purposes. Regulatory bodies such as the GMC (doctors), GPhc (Pharmacist), GDC (dentist) were previously not able to prescribe without a face to face consultation, within the regulatory guidance.

However, the only professional regulatory body that remained unclear was the NMC (nurses), it was not compulsory but safe and best practice to have a face to face consultation. Recent changes to the NMC state that is now a requirement, all professional regulatory bodies follow the same standards of prescribing standards.

🚩 No consultation: A consultation is crucial in aesthetics:
- Personalisation: Every individual has unique skin types, concerns, and aesthetic goals. A consultation allows the practitioner to assess your specific needs.

2. Understanding Options: During a consultation, you can discuss various aesthetic procedures available, including their benefits, risks, and expected outcomes.

3. Building Rapport: Establishing a relationship with your practitioner is important. A consultation provides an opportunity to ask questions, express concerns, and get a feel for the practitioner’s approach and expertise.

4. Setting Realistic Expectations: A good consultation will help you understand what results you can realistically expect from a treatment.

5. Safety and Health Assessment: The practitioner will evaluate your medical history and any potential contraindications for treatments.

🚩No face to face consultation: This is required for prescribing prescription only medications (POM). The General Medical Council (GMC), the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) all advise that a physical examination of the patient is necessary before prescribing non-surgical cosmetic medicines like Botox.

🚩 No aftercare: Aftercare in aesthetics is essential for ensuring the best results from any treatment you undergo. Proper aftercare can significantly enhance the results of your aesthetic treatments and promote healthy skin.

🚩 Upselling treatments: If my clients don’t need it I will be honest and tell them no. It is unethical, clients should never feel pressured to purchase additional services.

🚩Very cheap offers: Some practitioners may do this to build a portfolio/training academy’s. However, considerations should taken in to account such as product cost, time, insurance, consumables and prescribing costs taken into account.

🚩 No insurance: Although this is not a requirement for all practitioners, in an unregulated industry, as a nurse it is compulsory that I must have medical malpractice insurance.

❌Bruising and swelling may be present after treatment lips are particularly susceptible to bruising as they are vascular although I offer pre treatment advise.
