Setting the record straight on TPO — because misinformation helps no one!
First things first, all of our products at The Secret Spa are TPO free but I would still like to cover why this is important.
There's been a lot of alarm this week following This Morning's segment on gel nail products, so let's separate fact from headline.
There is no gel polish ban. What's actually happened is that one specific ingredient — TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide)TPO is a photoinitiator — It has been restricted in Great Britain. It's one ingredient used in some formulations, not the entire category of gel products.
The EU banned TPO from cosmetic products in 2025. Great Britain has followed: manufacturers can't place TPO-containing products on the market from 15 August 2026, and distributors have until 14 February 2027 to sell through existing stock.
The second thing worth correcting: the size of a salon has nothing to do with the skill, training, or professionalism of the technician working in it. A "little salon" can hold exactly the same qualifications, insurance, and product compliance as a large high-street chain. Scale is a business decision, not a proxy for competence. Painting small, independent nail businesses as somehow less legitimate does a disservice to thousands of qualified professionals who take compliance and client safety seriously.
If you know me and my standards then you know that this post is necessary!
Programmes with national reach have a responsibility to get technical detail right, especially on health and safety topics that affect livelihoods. Conflating an ingredient restriction with a blanket ban, and implying smaller premises equal lower standards, isn't reporting — it's misinformation, and it damages an industry built on genuine skill and qualification.
The facts:
💅No gel polish ban exists
💅One ingredient (TPO) is being phased out on a clear, published timeline
💅Existing compliant stock can be used until February 2027
💅Salon size says nothing about a technician's qualifications or standards
💅Our products are HEMA and TPO free!
